  • lower ratio for my BMX

  • Okay so the seat post is free, a little gt85 and twisting it in a vice free'd it up.

However it only twists and wont come out or in. No matter how much I pull on it which is a PITA

  • Hi guys.

I'm looking to build a pair of old 70's french bikes as randonneurs (one for me and my dad) and, therefore, I'm tempted to do a 650B conversion on them.

Given that I'm on a student budget, does anyone have a suggestion on which kind of rims should I look for, that are quality for the money?

    Thanks in advance.

  • If it's free and it spins, it should come out... eventually. Keep pouring the GT-85 or whatever in, day after day, and keep spinning and pulling. Maybe drill holes right through the seatpost, and put a rod through it to increase your leverage for pulling/rotating?

  • Can you safely suspend the frame upside down so as to use your own weight to twist and pull at the same time?

  • Maybe drill holes right through the seatpost, and put a rod through it to increase your leverage for pulling/rotating?

I thought of this. Though the frame is a large enough lever itself.

  • I honestly wouldnt know how?

I have access to a heavy based workshop stand tbf but worry I may damage the frame.

  • I'm picturing more of a basement scenerio where you would affix it to a rafter.

  • There's Thorn's own brand rims or these ones which several people from the forum have used

  • if you can get two of you, one either end of the frame then you should be able to get enough leverage.

  • Cheers mate. Any recommendation on what type of spokes and hubs should I look for?

  • Thanks for those. Looks promising if I change the 16t sprocket for a 17t. Gives an unrounded chain length of 49.92 inches. Up from 49.69.

  • That is wonderful! What's the frame, what are the specs? :)

  • Its out!!

Some more gt85, shocked it free with a hammer and it just popped out.

Patients was my friend this time.

  • Also be aware that these will almost certainly have French threading on the bb and probably headset too. So if they are in need of replacing, you may be taking on more than it’s worth.

  • My BMX ? Thanks ! it's a GT Peace 29, I customed 105 cranks on a MTB BB and it's so fun to ride !

  • No worries. I've never built a wheel up myself - try here

  • Patients was my friend

    Sorry for your loss

  • Oh ffs!!

    **patience

  • Picked this up from @SteadyCam with aspirations of making it a project. Not sure what to do with it yet, first step is new cables, bullmoose bars, possibly new cranks to run 1x7 - but liking full DX as stands. Def a respray as the paint is pretty tatty. Any inspiration very much welcome

  • That's sick! One of the first 29ers it seems? I would't change much, looks amazing as it is.

  • Yes, there was an Overdrive Comp (with XC Pro group) and this Overdrive (DX group) in the 1992 range, called "Supercross" bikes, which were essentially early 29ers. Both with MTB geometry and decent clearance for 45c Panaracer Smokes, which were noticeably different to other 'hybrids' which were 38C max and more upright.

  • From the 1992 DB catalogue.
