We have one of these in the house
Apple MacBook Air "Core i5" 1.6 13" (Early 2015)

Can I do anything to upgrade it? More mem? New ssd?

The memory and CPU in those are soldered. The SSD is replaceable, but it's a non-standard Apple module. There are third party adapters to fit standard NVME modules, but results can be mixed (instability, problems waking from sleep, etc).
