  • Buy the hollowbody! Gibson hasn't been making anything worth writing home about in the last decade anyway!

Quarantine has me looking at doubleneck 6/4 EDS clones on aliexpress... this is a worrying time.

  • I'll have to wait for the exact Greco model to turn up, they do seem to be around so hopefully I won't have to wait long... No hurry tho'...

  • Harlequin Guitar Club have loads of lovely Greco's through. If you look up Joe Branton on facebook and drop him a message he runs it and he'll look out for one for you?

I'd also consider a lawsuit Ibanez if I were looking for the Greco!

  • I never did have a goldtop les paul.

  • I'll keep an eye out, thanks for the link... I really need to get a Japanese dealer looking for me... I want one of these, this one's an absolute beaut...

  • That's proper handsome.

Still digging my Epi although the controls are buggered up, it plays and sounds just so nice. Totally changes the way I play. I'm used to bashing the shit out of a Fender but this seems to demand a much more gentle touch.

  • Didn't know anything about Greco till just now. So basically the same company and factory as early Fender Japan then? Interesting.

  • They were a bit too exotic for us in the UK BITD, they're everywhere here as well as Burny and Orville... And Guyatone and a million other brands... I'd see Tokais in the UK but never anything else...

  • There's some lovely guitars on J-guitar.com if you can understand it, some look like real bargains too. Never bought from there though always been tempted by the Japanese fenders.

  • Anyone here own a semi acoustic? I like the idea of having something a bit better to practice on without being plugged in but don't want to go full acoustic. Are they actually more resonant/louder without an amp?

  • Depends why you mean by semi? Those kind of thinline electric shaped things made of plywood are the worst of all possible compromises I reckon. I’d love a jazzbox (fully hollow deep section electric) though.

  • Yeah like a Fender Thinline or Gretsch Streamliner type of thing. People seem to love Gibson 335s but I can't find anything about how they sound acoustically.

  • I've had a quick noodle on an unplugged 335 and a similar looking Gretsch. Wasn't mad about the way they sound. They're obviously louder than a solid body, but in a sort of nasally way. Better to hear what you're playing for sure, but not exactly a nice sound. Both were beautiful to play mind...

  • Oh cool, so like a hollow electric rather than an acoustic that's been shrunk to electric size. I getcha.

335s are louder than solid bodies but not much. They have a solid core with two hollow chambers either side. Epi Casinos and Gibson 330s are a similar shape and fully hollow so a bit louder acoustically but all were made to be played plugged in. The acoustic sound is kind of a by-product of the design and not a selling point.

    Edit: yep, what he said^

  • For a bit of Rawlings on a budget i'd love something like this:

  • I've developed a sudden unquenchable desire for a Les Paul with mini-humbuckers...

  • That looks lovely, but the tuning pegs don't offer much hope of it ever sounding lovely for long...

  • I’ve a Gretsch G400 which is really nice to play on. Sounds full bodied and deep, just not as loud (volume wise) as a full acoustic. And it’s pretty.

  • Ooooh that’s nice

  • That is nice!

  • One of the best sounding guitars I’ve played was a 70s goldtop with mini humbuckers - if one ever comes up for a reasonable price I’m on it but they’re all out of my league for now!

  • I started off with an Epiphone Casino, but found I was doing most of my playing unplugged watching TV, and ended up with this. It’s MASSIVE compared to a standard electric. The chamber isn’t not far off a full acoustic but with the tear shaped sound holes it’s quite refined and muted. Plugged in also sounds great. For me it’s the best of both worlds, I don’t always have to plug it in and it plays as well as it’s sibling, the Strat. The Bigsby is fun too.

  • Yeah, as documented, I'm gagging to buy an archtop electric. I'm digging the florentine cutaway look on the Gibson ES175 style guitars. Just need some wedge to waste. I probably won't get any Trump bucks sadly....1200 to fritter on a bit of retail distraction would have been just the ticket.

  • Was texting Tym about Grecos today... Then he tells me he sold a Gibson Custom Shop 335 for AU$2800 last week... It didn't go on the website so I'm totally gutted, that's what the Grecos I'm looking at are going for!?! Would've snapped it up in a second... 🤦‍♂️

  • Can anyone recommend an online shop for tremelo parts? I've got an early 70's epiphone copy (well, one of the Matsumoko ones made at the same time but badged Orlando, but the same guitar, same factory, same time so essentially an epiphone) but have lost the trem arm and spring.
