  • Big Sainsbury's branches also have small electrical recycling bins.

  • Tried Patio magic?

  • One for the cable horders,

    What have you got...

  • You could give gripit fixings ago - I have shelving held up with them in several rooms. They’re a terrific bit of kit.

  • Today's DIY is going well.

  • A right of passage for us all.

Pipe cutter, compression joint, chisel out a bit more of the joist if need be for it to not foul the floorboard, and bobs your uncle.

Edit: tho tbh I’m not sure I like the look of the corrosion on the elbow below- might be worth replacing that while you’re there

  • This looks cool as a shelf and as a bedside table. And the bed itself! For the shelves, did you just use four long lengths of threaded rod, with appropriate washers/nuts? Cool way to get a perfectly-fitting shelf.

  • For the shelves, did you just use four long lengths of threaded rod, with appropriate washers/nuts?

Yes, and wooden disks with washers and nuts at both ends of the rods so it was braced between floor and ceiling. The scaffolding boards are warped and cracked so being able to adjust each corner individually was a big help getting useably level shelves out of them.

It was reasonably robust in that it never actually came down, but the rods were really too thin so it had an alarming sway. I didn’t risk putting heavy things on it, just a few books and some doohickeys I like to look at.

  • Notched joists make baby jebus cry

  • How do I prepare this floor surface for tiling? It's the inside of a fireplace. Do I put in some sort of sand and cement mix, compact it then wet self levelling concrete?

  • Looking at getting a couple of quick and dirty desks set up in the attic to try and do some video work if I can't get out and shoot stuff at the moment.

For quick and dirty I'm looking at an h-frame made of scaffolding/similar. Come across some kits like:
https://simplifiedbuilding.co.uk/kits/desk-tables/all/table-frame-kit-adjustable and https://simplifiedbuilding.co.uk/kits/desk-tables/all/table-frame-kit-basic and while there is a lot of appeal to just clicking a button and having a kit arrive, I can't help but feel 300 quid for a few meters of tubing, some fittings and castors seems a bit rich.

Any suggestions for alternative suppliers (either kits or raw material?). I guess that place linked above uses this place or similar: https://keesystems.com/store/tube.html - their lengths are about 40 quid for 3.2 meters (size 7 tube + there's about 6m required per desk), so 80 quid tubing, plus another...50(?) for fittings/castors assuming I can get through it with a hacksaw (eventually)?

    Any more for any more?

Obvs a month ago I could have just gone to the scrapper but a bit limited at the mo!

  • I think black pipe would be your cheap option.

  • The kee systems stuff is great and what I'd recommend if you hadn't have already found it. You can make literally anything out of it if you're looking for the industrial look or not that concerned about the overall look. Pair it with cheap laminate worktops or scaffold boards and you have a near indistructable desk (I should know I made a series of them many moons ago as temporary desks for baggage handling team leaders at Heathrow) the temporary desks lasted for 6 months the bespoke, heavy duty, custom build ones that replaced them (and cost 5 times as much) lasted 2 before they needed replacing.

  • One for the cable horders,

Local tip had an area for cables, took most of them there.

Obviously realised now that some of the ones I'd chucked as "fuck knows what this is, haven't used it for years so can't be necessary" were bespoke leads for various bits of equipment I've since found lurking at the back of the cupboard. Oh well.

  • Pack some rubble in, top with mortar then I'd expect you can just use tile adhesive and grout directly on that without the need for leveling compound. I think you'd get it level enough with a length of wood and spirit level

Hi everyone, really useful chat regarding the caulking issue earlier. I am trying to fix a heairline crack between my wooden door frame and the adjacent plasterboard wall. Can anyone recommend a product for that? Thank you so much!

  • The crack is between the architrave and the wall. Should be able to fix it with a bit of acrylic caulk.

Would caution that the cracking is caused by the door liner moving (the architrave is attached to this) if after using this stuff the cracking opens up again you need to find out why this is happening. This will probably entail taking the stops off the liner and checking the screws are tight.

  • Cheers. Kee it is. I'll do a few sketches/measurements in the morning and pop an order in.

No interest in what it looks like. Just needs to be solid and the bonus is that it can be assembled on site. I never got around to doing a proper staircase up to our loft so I have a tiny hatch and a flimsy metal ladder.

The loft itself is pretty sorted. Large space / head height throughout / solid floors / velux on both sides / electricity / plasterboard / desiccated flies - the works. But access is a pig so I need something I can bring up in parts (and then take down again assuming work ever picks up and we're not locked indoors for the rest of the decade).

  • Thanks for that!i am reasonably sure it started opening up when I started using a door frame pull up bar couple of weeks ago.

  • That'll do it.

  • USB, hdmi, coax, phono, nokia chargers. If you’re interested and can (fucking safely) bike it to W4, they’re yours.

  • Probably (the site put me in a queue!). Check the specs for your tile adhesive too. It will say whether it's suitable for applying directly to mortar or whether it needs sealing first

  • Knocked up a quick and dirty mini-greenhouse for my chilli plants out of our old windows. Would have liked to have more screws and timber, and some hinges - the list goes on - but it felt good to avoid a trip to the shops. Will give it a lick of paint tomorrow with some random shite that was getting thrown out of a job I was on, think it’s some awful turquoise! Free paint is free paint tho.
