I'm not clever enough to work these things out
Fortunately somebody else has already done it for you:
http://www.eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php
http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chainlengthcalc.html
It now has a chain and working brakes.
I've never gone single speed on a frame designed for a derailleur and I'm not clever enough to work these things out, so there's lots of experimenting going on. I've got a half link chain on the way too to see if I can improve tension without resorting to a specific tensioner.
Fitting a chain also revealed the chain line is way out despite looking ok to my (obviously wonky) eye. So that's on the list to fix too.
Thanks for the suggestions on the rear cable routing. I'm going to keep it as is for now, but keep an eye out for a neater fix.
Still umming and erring over grips too. I'll find something I like one day!
