It's this sort of sign that you want for A-roads with cycling bans:
These are old; I'm pretty sure they were there 25 years ago when I briefly worked next door.
In more recent years, the list of excluded forms of travel has expanded a bit, e.g. here at the M11 Link Road (euphemistically now called the A12) in East London:

Had a great evening riding around dual carriageway of west london that I normally wouldnt cycle down them otherwise.
Done the a316,A30 and A4. The a40 and a406 next. Are you allowed on the elevated section? I know hammersmith flyover a4cycling is banned.
