• You’d have insurance if you spent that amount of dosh wouldn’t you? It seems the chalet is open just no skiing.

Yes, that's the point. The chalet is saying they're open so no refund. The insurance company is saying they won't pay out becuase the chalet hasn't cancelled.

The fact that you can't actually get there is a separate matter, it's one of the problems of booking trips yourself instead of a package.

If it had been booked as a package holiday then there wouldn't be a problem with a refund or insurance claim.

  • Surprised this statement on FCO site for France give the necessary right to claim on insurance. After all it’s not essential travel. Reading again I wonder if they don’t have insurance as the travel company have advised them to claim and use the fco guidance as a reason.

    COVID-19 Exceptional Travel Advisory Notice

As countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel and border restrictions, the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Any country or area may restrict travel without notice. If you live in the UK and are currently travelling abroad, you are strongly advised to return now, where and while there are still commercial routes available. Many airlines are suspending flights and many airports are closing, preventing flights from leaving.

I obviously don't know what policy they've got, but I'd be very surprised if it's not covered by their insurance, unless they only took their insurance out recently so the policy includes a blanket exemption for all Covid19-related claims. My annual policy covers all expenses incurred as a result of cancellation where the FCO advice in relation to the destination country is 'essential travel only' or worse, which at present is the FCO's advice for every foreign country.
