  • 2) is there any other solution like re-threading (I hear that it is possible with italian threads, but wouldn't it be impossible to find a BB of 68mm wide with Italian thread, JIS taper?)?

Assuming this is a steel frame, your local framebuilder may be able to braze in a layer on top of the damaged threads then re-cut 1.37" x 24TPI BSA/BSC threads.

Switching to Italian 36mmx 24TPI is going to involve a 1mm increase in diameter, 0.5mm radius, so check how thick your BB shell is.

Finding two 1mm wide spacers to get a 68mm wide shell up to 70mm shouldn't be too hard. Alternatively, make some using the spacers used for BSA-threaded external BBs by sanding 0.5mm off the inner surface.

  • On a steel frame, I've had my local framebuilder tap the damaged threads out to Italian and then epoxy in an Italian-to-BSA convertor (like a very thin helicoil).
