I run a SRAM 50/36 and paid no special attention when orientating the inner ring, I just set it by the tab location as usual. SRAM do make a 50t outer ring for a 36 inner but mine is designed for a 34.
Shifting is fine, haven't noticed any lag or surfing before it hooks in. Maybe it would be an issue if more than 2t out but I would expect 48/36 to run pretty much as well as 46/36.
