My mum probably implemented those systems at ONS. Death tables were her speciality before she retired. Before that she was responsible for implementing the scanning solution for the 10 year census forms we all have to complete.
RE: Daily deaths. As the number of patients tested for Covid19 increases, the daily death is fairly obviously going to increase as well. Below is taken from the guidance for filling out death certificates. Until they release the full datasets, where you can see the other conditions being treated, the true death rate is harder to establish.
