I believe if you have certain 'viruses' already in your system they may well not tolerate the new kid on the block so to speak.

Well apparently having been exposed to some viruses like herpes can make immune response less effective for other viral infections, but increase protection against some bacterial infections including the plague.
I also read studies that showed mice infected with Lyme bacteria then go on to produce a lower immune response to influenza virus so there's a relationship between historic viral and bacterial exposure and how well your body will respond to future infections.
