    It's all to do with the ramp and pin placement to aid chain pick up/drop, having said that, it will work, I cannot tell you how well tho.

    When the chain is derailed from the big chainring, it needs to land correctly on the teeth of the small chainring (and vice versa).

    There are chainset, usually old one, that does not have ramp and pin, which can, with caution, be run with a big jump (you can see this in older chainset)

    When you add the ramp and pin to the mix, it can create complications as the chain may not be able to get picked up by the chainring, and in some cases, the chain rub on the ramp/pin.

  • I found a good example that show your explanation below.

    Show how the teeth is line up almost precisely when shifting from small to big.

    If the teeth Is a little further forward or backward, it can “slip” until it hook into the chainring, this happen with mixing chainring.

  • For what it's worth, my FC-6603 46-30 conversion has a big ring without ramps or pins. YMMV I guess.

  • That makes sense. I guess I could also try to rotate the smaller ring to get the teeth line up better. There are 5 possible combinations. So I guess one should work. I will order the new ring and report back.

  • I run a SRAM 50/36 and paid no special attention when orientating the inner ring, I just set it by the tab location as usual. SRAM do make a 50t outer ring for a 36 inner but mine is designed for a 34.

    Shifting is fine, haven't noticed any lag or surfing before it hooks in. Maybe it would be an issue if more than 2t out but I would expect 48/36 to run pretty much as well as 46/36.

  • Any recommendations for a carbon gravel fork? I’ve got a steel CdF - so 1 1/8th steerer, ideally QR with enough space to fit in a 40mm. Don’t need any fixing points as I use a bar bag. Straight blade and Matt desirable :) Cheers

  • I ran a Campagnolo 50t 9 speed ring and a 46t SRAM 11spd ring for a short while. Worked perfectly. I wouldn’t worry about it

  • I'm about to pull the trigger on a chinese Hylix for my CdF. Needs a a QR adapter though.

  • QR adapter? Is there such a thing?

    (i've got that fork. works a treat)

  • Some hubs allow to swap the end caps to switch between qr and thru.
