Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Thank you so much! So doing a bit more research, it looks I'm gonna need some new tools if I replace the barb and olive (https://epicbleedsolutions.com/collections/shimano/products/shimano-hose-shortening-kit).

    Feel free to call me an idiot if this is a stupid idea, but do I really need to replace them if I'm re-using the same hose? I'd rather not cut the hose shorter if possible, as it's about the perfect length right now.

    You might get away without doing so. However, the olive is supposed to deform to provide a seal, so technically you shouldn't. Might be fine though. Depends how tight Shimano's manufacturing tolerances are. Then again, getting the deformed olive off once it's deformed might be tricky, so probably worth trying it with the existing barb and olive first.

  • I'll give it a go and if it's not sealing I'll take it into a bike shop. TBH if it gets to the point where it needs a new olive and barb, that's the point at which I'm happy to pay a shop to do it, rather than attempting to do it myself!

  • It'll probably be fine without swapping out the olive and barb, if you do need to do it the only really useful bit in the kit you linked to is the blocks for holding the hose (you'll want a set of mole grips or vice to hold these) which may well come with your caliper and if they don't your LBS will have spares and already be throwing away loads.

    Generally it is, everyday we have to swap the hose round to UK specs as some of the bikes we get come in euro specs.

  • Bought some wheels with centrelock rotors. No problem - I have another set of wheels with centrelocks, I know what I'm doing. Go at the new wheels with a cassette tool and it's v obvious that it's not the tool for the job and I don't know what I'm doing. What fecking tool do I need now?

  • You'll generally be fine with a straight swap, if anything goes wrong ask your LBS for a barb, olive and the plastic block. Or make them do it.

  • Shimano bottom bracket tool in some centerlock hubs, generally those that can be converted to 15mm axle

  • OK, cheers. Hubs can be converted to 15mm axle so that makes sense. Though I think I tried a shimano bb tool and didn't get anywhere with it but that could largely be down to me being an idiot.

  • Oh good, I’ve got one of those. Except mine is one of these and seems to be too shallow to engage the lock ring because of the axle. So I guess I now need two hollowtech bb tools?

  • Quick question -possibly stupid- are all IS to post mount adapters the same? I mean as in if I swap callipers will the existing adaptors work still, to do different makes and models of calliper require different adapters?

  • The distance between the mounting points and faces will be the same - in my experience -
    but the ‘scoop’ below the calliper might differ in design to accommodate different calliper geo.

  • Thanks for the quick response. I’ve just tried sticking a pair of Spyres on using the existing adaptors that have worked for a pair of shimanos and Clark’s in the past. This time and it looks like the pads are sitting too low on the disk. The pads are making contact with the disk arms- not just the rim. Do I need a TRP specific adapter I that’s case?

  • No but they might be designed for a deeper rotor. What rotor do you have on?
    The pads not overhanging the outer edge of the rotor is more important than if they touch the ‘arms’.

  • TRP Spyres. I’ve bodged it with some washers. Will I die?

  • Sometime it’s weirdly specific to certain caliper even thought it’s listed as rotor sizes.

    I fitted a shimano caliper on a tektro adaptor which result in the pads sitting slightly off the rotors, which then rectify by fitting a shimano branded one.

  • does anyone have any TRP spyres or similar "good" mechanical disc callipers going spare? also need rotors (160/140). and an ISO/post adapter for the rear, i guess.
