  • Ha!

@edmundro good points. It's one of those thin tubular steel ones with a trampoline that was quite popular when we were little.

  • Screw 3" × 2" uprights to the arris rails of the closeboard fence (preferably through all 3). First use a couple of bits of feather edge in the reverse direction to the existing ones to get them square to the fence, then screw through the lot. Add a bit of 3" x 2" to square up the uprights above the existing fence to allow you to centralize the trellis. Privacy trellis with a tighter pattern than normal trellis is your friend!

  • Thanks.

In other circumstances I'd look into getting a brickie to build a wall there. Especially as when the had the extension built the patio area is just laid ontop of rubble that the wood fence is holding back. It also means the bottom of the brick work is a bit manky as it's below soil line on their side.

  • A local wood worker posted this on fb as something he'd installed in Levy... might be a diy option you could do?

  • That's nice.

    Saved for future reference.

  • Compost bin is overflowing with firstly it being spring and most of my shrubs and trees needing pruning and second the #selfisolation meaning spending more time in the garden

  • So I dug out the two council issued compost bins from the back of the garden that haven't been used for a couple of years and started to fill them.

Realised I still had too much so dug out another two old style plastic dustbins and filled those up too.

The plan is that as the compost bins start to compost and create space I can top them up from the dustbins

  • Everything in all four bins is shredded so should compost fairly quickly.

And if you are wondering what those trees are sitting behind the bins they are a beech hedge that was planted years before I bought the property and allowed to get wildly out of hand.

Paid out a wad last year to get them pruned

  • That's not a hedge it's a linear copse!

  • True dat

  • Up to 65deg in the pile now. Too early to tell if I'll the compost will be any good after a week but so impressed by its enthusiasm to digest anything that's thrown in.

  • Attempting to keep the onion flies away from the garlic this year. I give it about 5 hours before a fox or a cat trashes it.
That Clematis is about to explode into about a million flowers

  • I’m re landscaping our garden at the moment and trying to work out the best spot for a veg patch and greenhouse.

We’ve got trees on all side and I can’t work out which part of the garden gets the most sun.

Is there such a thing as sensors I can put in/on the ground to measure daily hours of sunlight over s period of time?

  • Time lapse photography from a high window?

  • I've been cutting down a tonne of ivy which was smothering the trees overlooking our garden and very happy with the result.

What can I do with the ivy? Don't really want to burn it and ideally not pay to have it taken away.

If I leave it in a pile will it take root and be a total bastard to get rid of? Or is there a clever way to prevent this?

  • Seal it in bin bags, tied, or a bin until it either rots down or green waste collections restart.

  • I suspect it will quickly fall into disuse.

  • There's a simple Tetris style website which does it for you.

You draw the shape of the garden then add objects (ie trees, fence, buildings) and it shows you the sunfall.

Let me see if I can find it.

    EDIT: Here it is: http://www.findmyshadow.com/#drawbox

Seems to spaz on my phone, but when I used it, it was on a desktop PC and worked perfectly.

  • Awesome. Thanks so much.

  • Lesson in not being lazy.

  • Please tell more about your Clematis.
I have two, Yukikomachi and Urophylla Winter Beauty, in pots ready to go.
Do you have any tips, bits of knowledge?

  • I have a painted tin watering can which has a small hole in it (see bottom right of can in pic).

I don't really want to throw it away, is there a relatively easy way to fix it?

    Bodges welcomed.
