Since their is no racing to watch, what about a discussion of who are your favorite riders of the last decade, and why?
Thomas de Gendt. Who doesn't love a breakaway? If you love breakaways, you've got to love TdG.

Alejandro Valverde

Nibali for me as well for the same reasons. Also Tony Martin; particularly when he nearly, nearly held the whole peleton off and just missed winning the stage (Vuelta 2013 I think). I was shouting at the TV hoping he'd do it!

My least favourite race but behind the scenes is always good.

Whilst I admire this, I really appreciate the riders who win big races through craft and guile, not because they are super strong.
My particular favourite example of this over the past ten years is Simon Gerrans. He was definitely not the best climber or the best sprinter or so strong he could drop everyone else, but if he was in a position to win at the end of a major race, his strike record was amazing. He retired with stage wins in all the major Tours, plus two monuments.

His win at MSR in particular comes to mind.

It was Hennie Kuiper, I think, who used the analogy of eating the food from someone else's plate before eating your own. He was before my time, but it perfectly describes how Gerrans would ride.

That is why I have always taken wheel sucker as a complement.

Guile is nothing without the legs and vice versa. Gerrans was stronger than everyone but Cancellara up the Poggio, no?
I get your point though.
If you put Gerrans’ brain in Sagan’s head etc etc...

For those on here who speak French the commentary on this infamous TdF stage is hilarious. I wish that guy did more.

Nibali would have a much better record if he hadn't wasted so much time babysitting Ivan Basso.
In one Tour where you could see him almost freak out on Basso as he shepherded him down a steep descent. Nibali turns around to face Basso and waves at him, come on, come on, hurry up!
He should have rode away and left him.

He was at the Cross nationals at Cyclopark last January, spectating with his family.

Thanks for that ... cracking - and forgot Mads Pederson was second .... top racing ... and great to see the stress in the team cars .... tough day all round ..

Carlos Betancur, the people's champ.

Tim Wellens - no guile at all, just all out attack. Hope he wins something big one day.
In a similar vein, Sep Vanmarcke, so strong but just not quite. -

Sep gets most sympathy points, indeed. Bicycle racing owes him one big one.
