What I find perplexing is the wierd application of offence to some things and not others.
It's just how this forum's Overton threads have shifted. There was a time, when most people were younger and less considerate, that it would take a Pedo Bear 'chopped next to a pile of murdered children before anyone would get outraged.
Times change. Deal with it.
Obviously calling for anyone who constitutes a forum outgroup to be murdered or bullied is still ok. So maybe just stick to inappropriate jokes about them.

I'd have to disagree with you there. It is pretty obviously a joke based on the (obviously false) premise that frustrated Germans are more predisposed to fascism than any other national group. It's tolerable because it's at worst a joke at the expense of people of equal status and power to the perpetrator of the joke.
It's not a great joke, it's not a particularly offensive one, but we should at least recognise it for what it is; an unprovoked attack on the civilian population of Germany. On the other hand...

Well, I'd have to disagree with you there.
We've already established that Hitler, is not in fact German. And, we've had a self-employed German artist state that he didn't believe it was a slur upon the German people. These things speak for themselves.
Also, as someone who has been self-employed and an artist, I find the lions share of the humour lies for me personally, in the surreal fact of history that before Hitler became a genocidal war-monger was in fact a frustrated artist.
So, again, the joke is at the expense of primarily, Hitler, and secondly, frustrated artists, and thirdly, relating both of these to our current virus-induced predicament.
On the other hand, your lame joke at the end is in fact a lame joke about German military tactics so...

What sort of BS mental gymnastics is this.
Germany is giving money to freelancers because they know that there is a risk they will become genocidal dictators.
It's not hard.
It plays on a German stereotype.
It's uncontroversial because everyone is comfortable with the stereotype / joke subject matter.
You can get into the points Tester was making about power imbalances or whatever to explain why it's ok, but it's a joke about Germans dependent on negative stereotypes.

The constant references to his birthplace are a diversionary tactic used by Germans to distract people from the fact that he only got the top job in Germany because twice in the space of a year in free and fair elections a third or more of them voted for the NSDAP. Regardless of where he was born, there would be no Hitler regime without the German people.
Californians don't try to pretend that the Governator was nothing to do with them🙂
