Didn't understand what you were on about till I looked at the prices of the bahco.
In defence of my opinel fetish, I paid less than 20 euro for the opinel without a box and was the cheapest the garden center did. It was used to chop back bushes the secateurs couldn't deal with.

In fairness the Bahco isn't as cheap as it was (iirc I got 2 for £24) and the Silky can be had for nearer £40 which closes the gap a bit.
The Bahco looks a bit smaller and it's the sort of weight that you can put in the back of your jeans pocket as you walk around the garden. Haven't checked the weight of the Silky.
If it's just general garden pruning though you don't need to go overboard. I use some +25yr Swedish folding saw of my folks that lay broken for years and I fixed. They just don't get used enough to properly wear out, and TBH if it's your own garden and you have trees that are going to require big branches to be cut a cheap bow saw is the tool for the job.

Interesting! Thanks for recommendation and thanks @ElephantBreathlynx, @user69121, @root and @hugo7 too :)

True. I meant vs a folder.
Chainsaws are great, but they do need to be maintained, electric or fuel. Which means servicing rather than a wipe down and squirt of lube.

We have a schism in our household on the chainsaw front. I am a stihl fanboi, wife has a husqvarna. I think it’s much like the cycling group set argument, they do a similar job but what I chose is bettererererer.

No.12 on order from Knivesandtools to start DIY Opinel Folding Breadknife project. Hopefully delivery is still possible.

Spent a lot of time with tree surgeons and landscapers, the broad agreement is that at the small\cheap end of the scale there is little difference between them, the difference comes at the higher end where Huskys are better made than Stihl (we have 3 stihl and 2 huskys on the farm, the stihl do feel cheaper).

I got one of those 3 in 1 Schrade sets from heinnie, the folding saw is ok based on first uses. Not used the pruning snips yet, and only tried the knife on the paper test - it was sharp enough to slice that.

So, is it agreed that Stihl and Husqvarna equate to Campagnolo and Shimano and everything else is a load of old SRAM?
-
• #2963
Looks like they are still delivering.
I'm after a bread knife as the crap one I have at home has tried to kill me a couple of times in the last couple of days.
Any recommendations? -

Good comparison between Bahco and Silky.

I now want a Silky, but don't need one as the Bahco will probably last for ages and is adequate for my needs.

I don’t use a breadknife. Always end up using whatever my sharpest chef’s knife is at any given point. Find the ragged cut and crumb spreadage caused my admittedly cheap old breadknife suboptimal. /Dammit
*disclaimer: my chef’s knives are cheap too but I keep them sharp ish

James, why the actual fuck would you need his n hers chainsaws?

Is it by any chance because you read Norwegian Wood?

This forum is beyond parody these days

Not just me then...

Any excuse for a chain saw is a great excuse.

A decent bread knife is essential IMO chefs knife don't cut a decent crust well.
I do fancy a fiddle saw bread knife.

Have 20acres of ancient woodland to manage. So a larger saw for felling trees and a smaller one for processing and cross cutting.
-
• #2973
Had it from new?

The saw or the wood?
-
• #2975
Yes.
Opinel saws are for Opinel completists. The Silky is very good, but 3 times the price of a Bahco, which is plenty good enough for this landscaper.
