  • One thing the lockdown hasn't been able to stop me doing yet is bike tinkering.
Thanks to the awesome guys at SBC cycles and their high speed wheelbuilding I now have a fully rebuilt rear wheel on the Omnom.
Same 8 speed Alfine hub(for now), 50mm deep x 26mm wide carbon rim, Schwalbe G-One speed 1.5" tyre, Gates cdx 24t sprocket, kcnc razor rotor and centerlock adaptor, hexlox Alfine wheelnuts...set up tubeless with schwalbe tape and orange sealant.
Also just fitted some new Time atac speciale 8 pedals.
The Chainset is a Middleburn 'road' RO2 x-type, chosen as it gives a better belt line for the Gates, with a Middleburn outboard BB and a 50t Gates Alfine specific ring.
Hopefully the front wheel will be ready next week. Using a 38mm deep x 26mm wide carbon rim, a Mack disc hub, and a Schwalbe G-One speed 1.5" tyre.
All that remains then are my custom titanium 'mini Jones' loop bars to arrive and it's pretty much finished!
I'm just grateful that at the moment I've still been able to keep hold of my second job which allows me to still ride it! ❤️

  • Thought this beast must have been posted somewhere on here :-)

    Question perhaps for @t0-ster

I'm considering getting an Ominium, although at 6'7" I'm wondering if the XL will be big enough? The sizing chart suggests so, but I've read ( possibly here ) that it's best to size up on an Omnium, which in my case would unfortunately not be possible

    It does look pretty big

  • I know I'm glad I didn't go with a medium like I was originally considering.
Even the large has a shorter top tube (56) than my track bike...and the seat tube is about 57.5 C to T.
I have a 110 stem on there and I think a 120 would feel closer to my normal reach, especially as the bars are higher on the omnom.

  • You mean you aren’t getting Matt to build you a cargo bike too?

I went for a XL at 185cm. It's the right length top tube for me, but not so much standover. I reckon you'd need a pretty long stem, but could probably make it work. Omnium geo is a bit weird.

  • I’m 6’3 and L fits me perfectly, and I’ve trimmed a couple cm from the steerer. I do have 75mm rise bars on it, but if I wasn’t putting in 8-9 hours days in would be fine to drop down an inch more. I’m also running a longer (by cargo bike standards) stem. Reckon XL will be fine for you.

Re: longer stems and handlebar choice discussed above, my advice, particularly with larger size where you have more space beneath the stem, is ignore any perceived clearance issues and get the bike comfortable and handling well. There are so many ways to load (rack extension, 45degree angle placement, 2x boxes overhanging edges and ratchet strapped etc.) saving 50mm of space is not worth it.
