  • I’ve particularly enjoyed watching the handful of riders who’ve been able to take total control of races through being on another level:

    • Cancellara crushing everyone with his Swiss mullet blowing in the wind
    • Sagan. Even though he’s not won as much as people thought he would, his Paris Roubaix win was sheer beauty
    • Alaphilippe for all of his panache and incredible descending
    • Froome has taken grand tour riding to another level and I’ll never forget the mad raid in the Giro but obviously there’s the Sky/salbutamol asterisks
    • Obviously it’s a bit soon to be adding MVDP to this list but on last year alone, he warrants inclusion
  • Whilst I admire this, I really appreciate the riders who win big races through craft and guile, not because they are super strong.

My particular favourite example of this over the past ten years is Simon Gerrans. He was definitely not the best climber or the best sprinter or so strong he could drop everyone else, but if he was in a position to win at the end of a major race, his strike record was amazing. He retired with stage wins in all the major Tours, plus two monuments.

  • His win at MSR in particular comes to mind.

  • Guile is nothing without the legs and vice versa. Gerrans was stronger than everyone but Cancellara up the Poggio, no?

    I get your point though.

If you put Gerrans’ brain in Sagan’s head etc etc...

  • Simon Gerrans

lives in clapham & works for goldman sachs now which made me respect him even more
