Make sure you are feeding the inputs enough. Your speakers are very sensitive so it seems more possible that you're underpowering the inputs.

If you go for the Crowns I'd give them a good clean. As they are PA Amps and possibly from a club/small touring system there is going to be a lot of smoke fluid residue in them.
And as mentioned before the fans in them can be noisy, not obviously a problem when the speakers are blasting loud music out but certainly audible at low volume.

99db/w/m is very high sensitivity.
99db is loud
Remember that an increase in 10w is a doubling of loudness.
You could drive them to uncomfortable levels with a handful of watts.
Consumer amp ratings are mostly about marketing and dick waving.
