yes.....normal 1/2" chain breaker doesn't allow it to sit properly in the tool

i can't quite picture what you mean. do you have a photo?

See how the splitter has a bit that goes inside each link, the inch pitch chain has solid inner links so won't fit a normal splitter.

commonly called a skip tooth chain......as M_V says the standard 1/2" chain splitter won't fit

today i learned about a new type of chain.

good shout, not expensive and variable link fitting by the look of it.......will try one out, thanks for the tip
.......long shot but can anyone point me in the direction of where I can get a chain breaker to remove three links for this narrow 1" pitch chain?
