The Mavic looks like other mechs from that era: Campag, Simplex , Huret, Zues and others. The body moves in and out only. I think it was the Japanese, either Suntour or Shimano who developed the modern derailleur where the body, now sitting more horizontal than vertical moves down and back as well as in and out.
