  • That makes sense. It must feel weird having your chain alternating between slack and tight like that, I kinda want to try it.

I guess the smaller the chainring and the less oval it is, the better it works?

  • You get a more subtle version on race BMX bikes. I've seen some marked up as having a half measurement (like 44.5 tooth) that are slightly ovalised.

  • I've got an oval chainring on my single speed commuting bike, it's fine, you've just gotta check the tension on the tight spots when tensioning the chain.

  • What hubs would you recommend for SSCX wheelset for Singlecross? Thinking about DT R460 rims and Novatec rear track hub (any idea what is the difference between A166 AND A186) and some Novatec road front hub, any idea which will be the best in terms of bearings durability for muddy and winter conditions?
Also, any difference between high and low flange rear hub for SSCX? Novatec A266 is another option, but with low flange and a few grams lighter.

  • Have you already got one in XXL?

  • Yeah, my rat/lock up one. It's a pretty good price for a NOS frameset that one

  • I'm a sucker for a tapered headtube on a canti CX frame.

  • Yall seen the new all city?

Basically the old nature boy with new dropouts.

Why didnt they just do this on their new frameset to start with i dont know.

Obvz more products means more money I guess.

  • I'm confused that they didn't just make it the 2020 Nature Boy.

  • Its sick they got a new tubing, HT and sporting carbon fork....

It just needs those drop outs.

  • I have DT R460 on two bikes and those are very good rims. Dont know about the hubs. I think the Formula ones are cheap and good. A higher flanges lets you have shorter spokes that give a stiffer wheel, at the expense of the hub being heaver. I dont care at all about that since I run 32 spokes, nor care about hub weight, so I would pick the cheaper one. Or you can pick the looker if you are into that.

  • I think the a186 is cup and cone and the 166 is cartridge bearings (I may be wrong, check it)
High flange is supposed to make a stiffer, stronger wheel. But light is good for cyclocross.
For the front maybe don't get something with too tiny bearings if you want durability.

  • The brake mount is absolute ew. This is a 160 rotor...

  • Seems a good bike to get this thread going again, in this case FGCX.

  • There is nothing CX about that.

  • Whatever it is, it's great.

  • fat TT away from perfect

  • Currently riding a 39-18 ratio singlespeed.

Tempted to flip the wheel over to the fixed cog which is also an 18.

I’m sure I remember that really to keep it feeling the same (what I want), then I should really drop down to a 17 for the fixed. Is that true?

  • i don't think so. fixed off road tho?

  • Hell yeah fixed off road

  • Got a 100 miler to the New Forest and back, mostly flat, mostly lovely ‘gravel’.

Thought I’d give it a try as I’m terrified of freewheels after my old one fell apart the other day.

  • i reckon 38/17 would be fine. i use 38/18 for cross and it's a bit too hard on some of the kickers and deep mud.

  • Readers.

  • @King_Saxlingham have you got a route for that???
