  • Don’t think that front mudguard will do very much

  • Should I try to ziptie a full fender to the fork ?

  • You can fit a full mudguard to a suspension fork. The fork crown doesn't move.

(From a thread on the Cycling UK forum. Some other examples in there)

  • Finally, mudguards on as winter comes to an end!
I opted out of fitting them myself. £9.00 from the wonderful folk at Lewisham Cyclery.
Raceblade Longs with standard size RAW flaps.

  • Only £9 to install?!
    Bargainous.

  • £9 for having a drill, a drill bit of the right size, a riveter, rivets, and someone spending 15 minutes faffing about. Or you can go to a hardware shop and see where £9 takes you

  • 15 minutes to install fenders has to be some kind of record.

  • I wasn’t being sarcastic btw.

  • £9 for installing the complete mudguards? Or just the flaps?

  • The guards and the flaps. Included drilling required to remove rivets. I reckon this is definitely bargainous. I thought it was more of a £20 job.

  • I would pay someone £9 to install mudguards any day of the week

  • lol. i was quoted $200 to install some veloduo 650b fenders by a shop in seattle. did take me most of a day to do it myself though...

  • What thickness of rubber for flaps? I've seen 2mm thrown around. Is 3 too thick?

  • No, I would go with 3.14.

  • After a particularly muddy towpath ride out to Harlow I bit the bullet and put some proper flaps on my Brother.

  • Looks like we've gone for the same thing! Might trim the top bit down at some point though.

Flies around like no-ones business so might glue a little mass to the bottom edge.

  • I've got to say, I didn't expect to spend my 30s comparing flaps with others on a forum...

  • Looks like shit and tyre clearance is shit but only needed to drill once :D

  • Holy smoke. Quite a flap.
How do you find the sticks pickup off road?
I trimmed mine right back to alleviate this.

  • Its made of maybe 2-3mm leather so is too light to pick anything stuff up - and because the inside is that slight furriness, it soaks up the water rather than scooping it and dumping onto my feet.

  • My rear (stainless) mudguard has always creaked when putting the hammer down as the frame twists. The noise is coming from the chainstays near the BB. Any advice on how to stop this? Would sculpting the guard so it doesn't touch the chainstays help?

  • Can you squeeze a bit of inner-tube between stays and guard?

  • What material did you use to make the flaps? I really need to do this.

  • Will give this a go thanks. If anyone knows of the Jan Heine approved method I'd love to know.

  • I had a rattling issue; used UHU to stick 1cm lengths of slitted 5mm clear PVC pipe around the mudguard rims where they used to contact the forks and seatstays. Pic here: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/15034066/
