  • local bike shop (indy) has had their busiest week ever apparently-lots of folk not wanting to take public transport and lots of NHS workers. Happy it's benefitting them and their customers tbh!

  • When it pans out I'll be off down there to get stuff back. There's also some snacks in my locker.

  • I'm in a dilemma, well probably not.
Have a bike shop full of customer bikes (probably around 15 good to go, 10 needing stuff done), almost all of them have identified themselves as key workers (most in the local hospitals, some from nhs Scotland offices etc), a few are just randoms.
Guess finish them off and get them collecteded then close totally is the correct thing to do.
However have more booked in Thur + fri, a large proportion will also be key workers (folk trying to get to their place of work without using public transport). Other bike shops will be the same I guess.

  • Stay open and only fix bikes for essential workers.

  • Second this (in reply to William)

  • Stay open for appointment only. Key workers book time to drop off/pick up. Card only etc.

  • Also in last hour ive heard and then seen two cars load up with bags and cases and bugger off. A mini panic exit of the city?

  • Not in London but seen two neighbours pack up cars and go

  • Fall of turbo

Is that the sequel movie where the snail disgraces himself?

  • where's it been stored? Probably turned to vinegar but you never know...

  • I guess the back of cupboards. It smells a bit like port, tastes of not much. I'll see what happens until the weed oil kicks in I guess.

  • hmmm. It's a Bordeaux so theoretically can age ok, back of cupboards should be cool and dark enough. If it doesn't taste rancid then fuckit.

  • Yep. I had to contact a 3 week list to call off all services. We've had an astonishingly busy few days with a lot of difficulty trying to highlight to people to keep proper etiquette to the point of telling people off.
I tried to highlight to the uppers that we should close doors but only be, by confirmed appointment, that we service bikes for those that are properly essential with credentials. Fell flat.
Irony behind all this is company was shutting us down as a business but all of a sudden their other subsidiaries are faltering and we're doing ok.

Do I think cycle shops are necessary. No. Do I think we can serve a purpose to those who are really helping out at this time and need it. Yes.

Except Halfords to close all store and including Cycle Republic.

The problem is the vague definition, technically it’s retail but it’s also a service.

I was offering discounted service to NHS workers, as well as only letting people buy a bike for transportation and not recreation (of course one can says he needs a £5,000 bike for transport).

  • Technically the new law just says you should not travel to work if you can do your job from home.... so go build those bikes for those key workers and god speed.

  • local shop isn't permitting customers in store I believe-bikes left outside and conversations through phone/door and sterilising contact points which seems a sensible way of doing it and would probably never be condoned or adopted by a big chain... pretty shit that a lot of Halford's or Evans office staff will get to work from home etc because 'safety' but shop floor will be expected to work.

  • Bike shops are specifically exempted from closing. Twice.

    “All retail with notable exceptions

Supermarkets and other food shops, health shops, pharmacies including non- dispensing pharmacies, petrol stations, bicycle shops, home and hardware shops, laundrettes and dry cleaners, bicycle shops, garages, car rentals, pet shops, corner shops, newsagents, post offices, and banks.”

Oh I got word from HO that Halfords/Cycle Republic is to close fully tomorrow until further notice.

  • Isn’t cycle republic closing down anyway regardless of Covid?

  • Evans is closing too
