EU/EW isn't buggy at all for me, so you might get lucky. I know of Long War, but haven't played it - I (as in me, the player) get fatigued over long campaigns, so prefer to keep them shorter. It's very popular, though. The XCOM subreddit has a lot of Long War players on it, and the community is surprisingly non-toxic. Good place to pick up strategy and management tips.

Cheers. I've encountered one or two bugs before (e.g. the soldier interface in the barracks not showing up, or a VIP on an escort mission not registering that my soldier is right next to him already), but they were all fixable by saving and restarting the game - so not too bad so far.
I'm currently playing EU, once I fail this I might switch to EW as I'm slowly getting the feeling of having a (very basic) handle on all the elements. It's a lot of fun so far definitely!
I was thinking about that, but I think I can easily sink a few hundred hours into this alone if the bugs don't get too annoying. Also, apparently there is a big mod called the 'Long War', have you ever tried it?
