Saving €80
..on a €2000 item you likely use for years? Are you being serious?
-
• #15253
Yep. That’s how sales works. Oh, I’m already spend x fuckloads of money, so a bit more doesn’t hurt. In £'s the i5 to i7 move is 150 more, adding about 10% to the total cost. That’s a legit saving, on something that many won’t notice for most office/web use.
-
• #15254
£150 is indeed more of a sting for something that as you say many won't need / notice.
In Euros it's only adding 4% (to the 16GB / 1TB configuration) though and I'd say that's rather negligible, plus I'm sure getting that upgrade will help with resale value so should be a smart idea down the line.
Back to the original question though -
are there any downsides in choosing i7 over i5 I'm not aware of? -
• #15255
Nope, as cost is not an issue there’s no negative to an i7. When idling it wont use any more battery. Only if maxing out all cores would that be an issue, but then it’s doing the job it is supposed to do.

The new iPad looks pretty interesting, the new magic keyboard also looks like a significant step up from the folio keyboard.
That new keyboard with built in trackpad is quite expensive, but I really love how they're putting it to good use with ipadOS, those morphing cursor ideas are next level..

My iPad Pro is certainly powerful enough to use as my main machine when I'm travelling, but the folio keyboard isn't good enough. Interested to see if the magic keyboard can change this.

the new Air does look nice but a max of 1.2ghz CPU is a bit shit

Hack. Everything works perfectly too.
Oddly everything works perfectly, including my LG 5K monitor
Still want one of these but the magic money tree isn't delivering.
How does TB3 work on a hack?

• #15261
I have no idea, but it does, perfectly so far...
My mobo has dp in that feeds the tb3 port which is unique. -
• #15262
Interesting. What mobo is this?
Don't worry, there's absolutely no way I could afford to recreate your setup ;)
-
• #15263
Ha, maybe you should? You sound more competent than me with hacks but I still have my instal USB so you could get everything up and running dead quick (you noticed Clover is no longer being supported? I dont think it works past 10.15.3 due to patches - maybe).
Asrock X570 Phantom gaming ITX TB3...

Sorry, probably a dumbass question but i'm getting nowhere with Google...
I have a 2012 Macbook pro that i need to WFH on, i also have a Thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor that allows me to connect my mac to another screen via an HDMI cable. I'm having no luck whatsoever sourcing an HDMI ready monitor but i have been lended a decent HP monitor that uses an older display port input (no mini display port). Is there any reason i cannot buy an HDMI to display port cable such as the one in the link to connect from my Mac to the monitor?
Alternatively is there such a thing as a Thunderbolt (1 i believe) to Display port adaptor? So far only finding adaptors for Thunderbolt 3's.
My work are asking us to expense new monitors up to £150 so buying a used HDMI screen isn't a good option for me atm.

• #15265
Just noticed the cable in the link is not bidirectional so i need something that'll go from HDMI to Displayport not the other way around

Yes really, i've been really struggling to find a 27" screen in stock for my budget. All the main retailers have been wiped out of screens and cable accessories.
Thankfully someone has sent me a link to an Ebuyer deal so i've just ordered a HDMI screen. Which is probably a good thing as i think i'm right in saying a dataport will only work as an output.
As you were.

Completely slipped my mind that they simply would all have been bought. Sorry.

If you're concerned about it being a hardware/BIOS issue, you could also get something like this - although you'd also need a wired mic for it to work
