  • My partner used to work for a homeless housing charity/hostel - they're struggling for food too so we'll be donating some stuff directly, it might be worth asking around locally

  • Same. Also, I'm not vegetarian, but it's not like all I eat is meat... I could have gone for some fresh peppers for example, but alas, it's cleaned out. Some tofu left, but we already have some at home so no need there - but there was absolutely no fresh veg of any description left.

  • I'm a teacher and have taken the day off today as I've had a tight chest and other cold symptoms the last few days and thought it was for the best just in case. Feels utterly ridiculous to be sat at home, because I'd normally be at work feeling like this. Everyone I've spoken to says it's the right thing to do, but work are being quite blasé about the whole thing. Spoke to the leadership about my predicament yesterday and they were all sporting colds and coughs themselves! We're actually staying open as it's an SEN setting, but we still have absolutely no idea what's happening. We don't count as keyworkers so looks like we won't be able to have our own kids at school either.

  • Fucking hell, this virus is really exposing who took the GDPR laws seriously.

Emails from all manner of bastard retailers about how they're handling this.

Whitehall sources say most shops could close and transport could be restricted to key workers in London by the weekend under plans being considered in Government

Seems like this is the government strategy. 'Leak' through sources to seed the idea before confirming a while later.

On another note, it is interesting to see flushed out those of one's friends who are more susceptible to the wilder rumour ends of the social media / online world. I don't have many from the 'garlic gargle' end, but a few on the 'army manoeuvres on Clapham common' side.

    So much this.

  • Someone I respect as a friend and professional told me the other day she'd 'read it was to do with 5g'

  • I mean I read this too.

On a subreddit devoted to stupid conspiracy theories.

  • Ha. She definitely said it in a 'what do you think to this?' way.

  • Anyone know what the situations are like in the Cash & Carries that the corner shops go to in vans themselves to stock up?

Well I was out yesterdays and just now. Visiting 2 local shopping parades.
All the corner shops are well stocked with everything required.
Lots of veg, Pasta, Meat, tins. Huge bags of rice Afghan rice, 5 litre Olive an other oils in tins.

Seems there's no issue with Cash and Carry atm
Also not busy at all. Like the other day Iceland is rammed while the shop next door is was empty.

  • Same. Also, I'm not vegetarian

    You monster

  • Thanks, I might still do a lap of the block to peer in the window of the corner shop as I don't think my inner "what if" monologue will be quieted if I don't.

  • Used to respect as a friend and professional, surely?

  • In then terms of supply chains etc, it will be interesting to see how it pans out, but in general most commercial air traffic, freight and shipping etc is still operating, unlike passenger flights.

The impression you get is that in Italy only very key workers are allowed out, but a client of mine has said that factories making leather goods, bags, wallets etc are still operating and shipping products to the UK.

  • I went out to run a few errands, bought a couple of items at petrol station supermarkets which were well stocked. Everywhere is busy though, pensioners everywhere, we are going to be worse than Italy

  • they government haven't released the list of key workers yet.

Also teachers going in with tight chest and cold symptoms is fucking irresponsible, especially a SEN school

  • We don't count as keyworkers so looks like we won't be able to have our own kids at school either.

    Did I understand that correctly?

Teachers who are forced to be at work to look after key workers' kids, aren't themselves classed as key workers so their kids have to stay home?

  • I mean based on what we're getting from our kids' school and nursery.

  • All the corner shops are well stocked with everything required.

Ssshhh. Our corner shop is my secret weapon once we actually run out of TP and the idiots have still not stopped hoarding it...

  • pensioners everywhere

My experience when I've been out too

  • When it is all over expect an explosion of life and colour. Once again, we will marvel at live theatre, holler for our favourite team in a stadium, and share intergenerational Sunday lunches in restaurants. And we will enjoy these things even more, knowing what it is like to do without.

This is what I'm expecting too, and what I'm looking forward to.

  • This is where we're at at this moment. All unclear. We are a specialist setting so it's case by case but the children we have can't be taught just anywhere so we need to be there. It's going to take some sorting. At this point it's very hard to plan as we're so early into it, even though it feels like people are already taking it all a lot less seriously.

  • The impression you get is that in Italy only very key workers are allowed out, but a client of mine has said that factories making leather goods, bags, wallets etc are still operating and shipping products to the UK.

Our factory there is still just about producing, but at a vastly reduced capacity. However as supply shrinks for components up the chain it's beginning to be limited and will continue slowing until the restrictions are lifted.

  • Only it's horseshit. A load of theatres and live music venues are going to go to the wall pretty swiftly, many bands aren't going to be able to afford to keep going. If your favourite football team is in the lower divisions, there's a likely to be a good chance you'll never see them play again. Independent restaurants, cafes, pubs are all in serious jeopardy.

If you want to go see Coldplay, watch Manchester United and eat in Wetherspoons, yeah, you'll probably be fine.
