Again, the missed opportunities to take action earlier are astonishing. Why weren't they scaling capacity when it was clear what was going to happen in January? It sounds like there is still a lack of political will as Vallance is quoted as saying:
That’s what I’m pushing for very hard.
As in, he still hasnt been given what he has asked for.

Maybe try help prevent that?
Although you are working still at a school?? -

WHO are utterly corrupt and will say whatever China says, don't believe them. Though the number of cases are, actually, down in China because you're not admitted to hospital if you have a fever, and the media is now saying that the forrins are to blame for bringing it back to China (in fact, it's Chinese nationals coming from overseas but whatever, blame the foreigners anyway).

I see my elderly neighbour 75+ leave her house every day.
Imagine my horror then as I survey bands of Belgian octogenarians and nonagenarians go out for their daily shop. We live in one of the many new-build developments built to house former colonists in the early 1960s.

Same. Offers of help are starting to be put through doors in our flats, I think I'll add one to it.

You know they weren't? It looks like the UK has scaled better than a lot of other countries?
I'm not saying they have or were, but being aware of more need doesn't equate to lack of will nor a failure in terms of ongoing increased roll outs.
I'm not an apologist for this shit government, btw. They are shit. I was just responding to your initial post which said you'd not seen any explanations as to why the UK wasn't testing more.

Sorry - the tone of frustration was directed at the situation not at you. Thank you for the link.

This is going to be a huge test of relationships, I am working from home now with my girl friend and 2 house mates. Exercise and booze will be the only thing that keeps me sane, I’m already bored and missing my work pals and I wouldn’t even be at work yet.
Exactly what me and the Mrs said this morning. Not that I've got anything to worry about but still.
I'm already planning a run later today.

parkrun just cancelled nationwide.
Running is good, but running in large groups of people you don't normally mingle with is bad.
(There's no way you can keep 2 yards from everyone on a parkrun like Wimbledon Common, the first 400m is a jostlefest.)

Me & the Mrs don't work at home well for a day let alone weeks. I like the radio on and tap way happily whilst she prefers silence.
I have taken to walking into the study (we have to work in separate rooms) and whisper so as not to disturb her further. Oh I laugh... -

She probably does some daily shopping. Carrying by hand.
Offer to shop for her if you can.

I am self isolating due to being one of the 'vulnerable groups' (asthma).
Local people have been great, putting stuff through doors and organising help on the Facebook groups. I assume she's going out as she's keeping to her daily routine.

I'm in self isolation. Lots of local people offering to help though.

WHO are utterly corrupt and will say whatever China says, don't believe them.
If that´s true then we really are in the poo, for one´d be hard pressed to find a single top microbiologist who isn´t involved with the body in one way or another.
Here for example we have Leen Vervaeke, de Volkskrant´s China correspondent, reporting on car makers restarting factories in China:
At the end of the article she quotes Ian Lipkin, he of Contagion fame but also head of a WHO infectious disease centre with an impossibly long name.
Anyway, at least reporters from small countries still have their press cards, right?

He also wrote for the far right propaganda sheet and government mouthpiece, The Spectator, that now was the time for Corbyn's policies to be implemented.
Sadly we have the wrong party in power.

Tell me about it. Living in different countries has even more downsides than normal right now.

Remember the punch a nazi movement?
Is it socially acceptable to punch someone who says “I’m supposed to be in self isolation”

In more good news, following an appeal by the Dutch doctors´federation to temporarily relax recruitment rules, well-nigh 2,000 former healthcare staff sign up as volunteers in a couple of days´time. They´ll be given crash refresher courses once it´s been established that they´ve not been out of the profession too long. Fucking heroes.

It's only US journos who've been kicked out (for now), in addition to the ones kicked out a few weeks ago for the "sick man of Asia" article.
I'd love, really love, to have faith in the WHO but it's hard when they're repeating stats from the Chinese govt, which are clearly not true.
Car factories... A big problem is that several major auto companies have factories in Wuhan. I guess the ones in other provinces can open. The china hq of an international auto company here in Shanghai is aiming for 60% normal next week.
Edit to add: China really really really needs the auto industry to pick up as soon as humanly possible, last year some of the top 10 companies had things like -50% y-o-y growth.

A mum on my daughter's class' WhatsApp group just forwarded a bullshit poster thing, claiming that gargling with water, salt and vinegar will kill the virus - please share this information as it could save a life.
I told her to delete it and that it is dangerous. No reply as yet.
God I hate people.

Depends how much time you want to spend arguing the toss.
Angry ultra racer with time on his hands?
Guess who tends to get his money back when he feels he's been wronged?
Oh, I got it wrong then... :)
