Good point!
Ok so how much do I need to spend on a decent monitor?
-
• #5903
Depends! I have a lovely dell QHD thing, which is a really nice pixel density, but even something like this, which is 1080p in a 21" frame would probably be fine for £70

Edit: maybe this HP one which is £90 but has 5 star rating for 141 reviews

All v helpful, thanks! May try and wander down to pc world or something before I can't leave the house as it would be good to see the differences before I commit.

So I obviously went ott and have bought a QHD monitor, on the spurious basis that I can zwift on it when we're in full lockdown...
Cheers for all the tips!

The higher resolution, the more work you can fit on the screen at once, making you more productive. So that can justify any screen you want.

Nice, as Sumo says more pixels = more work, honest guv

Ok so how much do I need to spend on a decent monitor?
Such a difficult question! I actually came to this thread to ask about monitor recommendations. As I've been told to self-isolate for the next two weeks I'm going to be looking at a screen at home more :/
I've currently got an Asus PA248Q which is one of their 'Pro Art' monitors, so a decent IPS screen, but I've had this since 2013 and every few years I just start thinking my screen isn't big enough and now I want a 27" or bigger...
Funnily enough I have been looking at lovely Dell QHD things, specifically this one:

Word of warning - if you are not a gamer or usually work from home type, don’t get a monitor that is bigger than what you have in the office.
I got a 4K 27inch monitor on loan to me since Oct last year and I was really happy with it. Then in Dec I decided I want 1 at home too, only I went for a 4K 32inch... now whenever I am at work, I think the 27inch monitor is shit. 🤣🤣🤣

Does this mean I have to work harder from now?
32 4K at home and 27 4K at work...
Nooooooooo!!!

The Dell Ultrasharps are lovely. I had three of the older models U2713HM and U2715 I think. All 1440p.
I ended up flogging the three of them and getting two 4k monitors instead, LG 27UK650 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0798QLW64
(though looks like there's an updated version, the 27UL650)
Think I paid about £350 each. Price fluctuated a bit on AmazonNot a bad word to say about either the Dells or the LGs

I don't have that problem because I use two monitors at work so the total screen area will still be bigger! I think that's part of the issue actually...
-
• #5913
You must do exactly 5inch more work.
-
• #5914
That's a point, I should probably be getting 4K really right? And the one I linked to isn't?
-
• #5915
An older model of that, yes
-
• #5916
One you linked is 1440p
4k one is the u2718q instead, at about £500
Or there's a newer u2720q, but a bit pricier -
• #5917
For 4k, Dell models end in 'Q'. I have a U2718Q.

2x 24" 1920x1200 monitors at work. 3x as many pixels at home :/
I'm WFH at the moment and supposed to be simply remoting into my work machine. IT would have a fit if they knew I was copying stuff via dropbox so I can work locally, but everything here is so much better.

Oh yes, once you have dual monitors, you can’t go back...
-
• #5920
I'd say buy what you need to get by and then buy 2nd hand when millions of monitors are going cheap as everyone has gone back to work and no longer wants them around.
-
• #5921
Just in case anyone needs webcam, you might want to start looking right now. They are going fast... 🤣
-
• #5922
2? Those are rookie numbers.
-
• #5923
I did.

Yes, we have seen you setup...

More monitors, more context switching, less focus, less work.
or in my case, more monitors, more porn, less focus, less work.
and webcams in my house... no fucking chance.
Trying to spend the minimum to be honest, as this is mostly just for work - only other thing I guess we might use for is a bit of pissing around on the raspberry pi I bought ages ago
