M3 thread taps - why do both M3 0.5mm and M3 0.6mm taps exist? I thought M3 x 0.5mm was the standard, so why is there a 0.6mm pitch too?

0.5mm is standard ISO coarse. There will be fine threads too, 0.35mm IIRC, but 0.6mm is too coarse to be useful, unless self-loosening is a desired feature
