Nice one, thank you! Might just buy that one...

Maybe spend similar money on a hand grinder, they are smaller and you might get a better quality grind for the price?
It also really makes you feel like you've worked for that coffee

Honestly, I just think I'd be less inclined to use it and I very much doubt I'd be able to taste any discernible difference in grind quality... At that time in the morning I don't want to do much beyond press a button...

I'm with you on this. I had a hario hand grinder which was great, but I can't taste the difference and this is just a push of a big button. If you're not at the using mineral water and monitoring water temperature stage of coffee nerdism, I'm sure the Dualit is fine.
I would always recommend some cheap scales with a timer too though. Makes a big difference in being able to follow a "recipe" and is not much more effort than just dumping some water in the top.

I have cheap scales and timers available so I'll definitely give this a go. probably just not first thing in the morning!
If I were to spend more, as much as anything else to avoid buying cheap and buying twice, what would the recommendations be for a ~£100 max grinder?

I think the Wilfa Svart is well regarded provided you're not after espresso levels of fine. Seems to be about £100 new now, but not many come up used. Whether you could really taste the difference between than and the Dualit, I'm not sure. The Dualit's are well made too. I just run some cleaning granules through every month or so to keep it all in order.

Do you know what grinder your mate has? Could help work it out.

He's got a Bodum, basically one of these but less fruitily attired: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BODUM-10903-73UK-1-Bistro-Electric-Grinder/dp/B01I95EI9G/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=bodum+burr+coffee+grinder&qid=1583936715&sr=8-3
I'm heavily leaning towards that Dualit on ebay at the moment.

Anyone with an opinion on my Helor issue?
-
• #16986
Seems fine, but at the helor prices i can understand why you might feel miffed.
-
• #16987
Only miffed if it’s defective :)

I tend to recommend that £40 Dualit to people who want to grind their own for anything other than espresso and who aren’t coffee dorks, just need a tool for the job. They’re perfectly adequate and a big step from pre-ground.

Hurrah! I should do more of this internet advice stuff.

• #16990
You're both good enough for me - gone for the Dualit - cheers!

I'm using a £40 Krupps burr grinder at home. It's not as good as a proper commercial one but it does the job well.

No loo roll in the ASDA shop so going to use Aeropress filters until store stocks are replenished

I've just been scooting my arse along the ground like a dog in nearby parks.

Had that Krups one Sumo posted for a few years, definite improvement for filter coffee (compared to pre-ground coffee)

Even a total shit grinder with fresh beans is gonna be better than pre-ground. Oh, unless maybe you're getting subscription pre-ground stuff, I was thinking supermarket pre

What do I use to clean my wilfa classic coffee maker? It’s due one soon and I can’t find specifics online. Any ideas?
-
• #16997
Puly caff / cafiza if you can get hold of it conveniently, if not a crushed up dishwasher tablet is the same thing.
Edit, sorry did you mean de-scaling? If so citric acid or appliance descaler. If it’s aluminium inside you need tartaric acid or Gaggia descaler sachets.

Oh fuck, now it's serious. Can't get any Moccamaster No.4 before the 18th and I only have 4 papers left.
-
• #16999
Yeah the stuff to clean it when the light comes on. I’ve been washing the jug and filter big with a sponge - hope that’s not the wrong thing.
This is easily one of the best presents I’ve ever got.

Any #4 filters will do it. I use Melitta if there’s any left in the supermarket. I can send you a box if you’re stuck, we get them in bulk for the shop.
I've got a Dualit burr grinder which does fine for my pour over. They are about £80 new, but you can get good used ones on ebay for about £40, which is how i picked mine up. Won't go fine enough for espresso, but pour over / french press it's ideal.
