Crank arm pedal thread stripped. How to repair?

Posted on
  • Can anyone let me know how to put new threads into a crank arm for the pedal. Both drive and non drive side have been stripped. I've got a tool from wiggle that can do it to a certain extent, but I think the hole is too big and worn out for these. I read about helicoil somewhere but not familiar with using these and what size coils would I need? Also I'm assuming I'd need to buy two of these for each side as the threads are different?

    Thanks for the advice.

  • You’d need to drill out the existing threads, re-tap for a size up, then install the helicoil.

Bit of a pita, only really worth doing for exceptional cranks.

  • Fix it with your credit card and a new set of cranks.

  • Lol. I know mate. Just be good practice to learn how to do this stuff for the future as cranks aren't all that anyway.

  • Ohh. Let's look into this. To drill out the existing threads just use a drill bit slightly bigger than the hole?

  • Thanks mate. I'll take a look.

  • Fix it with your credit card and a new set of cranks.

    So much this.

Helicoil repair is always going to be a bodge.

  • You can also buy threaded inserts which may be slightly more straightforward than helicoils.
All of it seems like a faff tho tbh.

  • Lol. Yeah it does, but I have the pedal threader and ws able to do a good crank on the one side, but the insert thing I didn't have to do. However, the insert thing is a bit of a faff. However, I've got another sram x1 rival crank where the pedals have seized and pretty sure if I ever get the pedals out then I'll need to retap.
