I've been getting through quite a lot of brake pads this winter, just because of the wet weather. I'm getting around 2000km out of a set, although my commute doesn't require much braking (nearly traffic-free).
Chain wear rates will vary hugely based on a large number of factors. Too much lube can be as bad as too little, picking up dirt and then working like cutting fluid. Also mashing a high gear, etc etc. 3 chains in 2000km is very unusual. I do know someone who used to get through them at around that rate. He is built like a fridge though.
