Great interview with John Barnard on F1 design, carbon fibre and a fair bit of history chat:

‘Trombone steering’ ... Merc/Hamilton add another dimension to the steering console?!
-
• #7007
Interesting system. And apparently the FIA have given it the all clear, which I find surprising given the relationship between ride height and toe-in resulting from caster angles.
-
• #7008
And of course, Sky F1 think it's ingenious. I'm sure if it was Ferrari they'd be being labelled cheats at this point.
Wasn't there a huge number of systems similar to this outlawed under the 'movable aerodynamic device' ruling? Surprised this gets around that (if it still exists).
Edit: Thought it was a ride-height thing at first, ignore the aero comment above.
-
• #7009
It will affect the ride height, albeit only slightly, unless they're running zero caster uprights.
-
• #7010
That is true, at first I thought it was a more-explicit ride height adjustment as it was triggered on the straights.
It does seem like a potential season-dominating bit of tech, especially if it allows them to open up pit strategies due to elongated tyre life. Be interesting to see if there are any downsides regarding having the tyres 'cool off' around the lap causing lack of grip once back in standard configuration.

Marko is being an idiot as usual

I think his doctorate in law has given him ideas above his station, not for the first time

Still 3 times more expensive that F1TV. Sky can do one.
Edit: In Ireland I can pay EUR 27 to be able to stream (not live) all races for the season, that's tempting.

McLaren pulling out of Aus GP, will be surprised if it goes ahead at this rate.

Let's see how stubborn fia are
-
• #7017
And fair play to Hamilton being vocal about it amongst the usual "Well we have to trust the FIA in their decision".
-
• #7018
Isn't there some sort of soft agreement that if one team pulls out the rest will too?
-
• #7019
The Indy GP in 2005 would suggest not.
-

Everyone except Ferrari, who get maximum points by default.
-
• #7021
I recall reading something to that effect from Brawn, F1 tends not to follow anything but iron-clad written agreements though.
Looks to be cancelled, but no official word as of yet.

Cancelled now!

Yeah i saw it was made official. Sad times

Surely someone at RedBull is going to send Marko off into retirement finally now;
His idea was to have all 4 F1 drivers and a load of their juniors intentionally be exposed to Covid so they could get it over with.
Asked how his vision was taken by Red Bull officials, he added: “Let’s put it this way, it has not been well received.”
Did not think about this, will check it- thanks. In the meantime, if anybody wants them for her / his own archive just let me know
