I borrowed my bro's Slate in February and the BB area was, you'll never guess, really creaky. He's had it serviced since (they changed the bearings) and it still creaks. It's usually something to do with assembly more than the actual BB, no?

Yeah can be too much / too little preload through the cranks. Dicking around with spacers might solve it.
The spindle can also get mashed up over time where the bearing surfaces are.
Or new bearings and loctite...
