I just had a look at these and I feel like 20” wheels would be a massive upgrade in usability for distance?
Probs well spenny though.

Yes, just slightly less nimble / quick to speed / compact.
Brompton rims are 349 mm, common 20 inch rims are 406 mm, so the difference is nearer two inches than four.
I suspect being able to run fat tyres is a bigger deal than the diameter.
