• Lost my father to pneumonia complications so as the first positive case in my town is confirmed its definitely triggering my anxiety badly. I live in Cheltenham and work in Bristol so the advice not to travel by public transport is concerning me but I am not sure there will be an opportunity to work from home, need to talk to managers.

Its frustrating that in France gatherings over 1000 are being banned and sporting events postponed or cancelled and yet here in my town with a confirmed case (so very likely to be others not yet detected) we are about to have 200,000 people descend on the town from all over for the country and world for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

At first I thought this would be another false emergency like swine flu but I have just been watching it getting closer and closer, and it looks like even if you don't get it there is going to be huge disruptions to daily life for months to come.

  • false emergency like swine flu

Swine flu only turned out to be a false emergency in hindsight. At very least it was an excellent pandemic response drill.

The world took it seriously for good reason. In the end, anything up to 20% of the world's population were infected. The fact that it only ended up killing a couple of hundred thousand people is just good luck.

Company I work for have just had to shut an entire campus because one of the Scotland woman's rugby squad tested positive yet they are carrying on with the build for the men's World Curling Champs in my building. There are teams coming from Italy and China.

Given, curling might not pull in much of a crowd but even removing spectators from the equation it seems a bit mental to be carrying on with an event which will involve a lot of people travelling internationally.

Just had a look at the world curling federation website and twitter feed and there's no mention of coronavirus. The woman's World Champs starts in canada in 5 days.

  • Hmm, my parents, both in their 80s, are there (it’s where I grew up). Not sure they get out to many sporting events though.

There is no advice not to travel by public transport. What makes you think there is? Are people in Cheltenham being told that?
