  • Anyone got a pair of old Tannoy dual concentrics in their system? Monitor Gold, HPD etc.

Thinking about acquiring some and building cabinets - good to hear them first though.

  • Look up “classic album Sunday’s” run by Cosmo.

  • Dude! I might have the perfect pair!

Cheviots. They have just been refoamed this week and need picking up. The cabs are ok, but would be perfect for a rehome

  • That’s brilliant, I’ll get in touch with them to see if we can become an affiliated venue when I’ve got it up and running. Thanks for that.

  • I have known Colleen for years. The concept started with her partner Adam and myself cooking a meal together followed by the three of us sitting down and listening to an album all the way through. They had a ridiculous hi fi with Klipshcorn horn speakers, valve amps and crazy turntable with kowetsu handmade cartridge/needle.

    It was amazing.

  • Interesting... tbh I’m trying to find some knackered ones that have been in a loft for 20 years. Very much doubt I can afford what you’d want for the Cheviots. I’d love to give them a listen though. You in London? Do you like having beer delivered to your house?

  • I’m in SE London until the 20th of April.

I haven’t had a beer in six months, but you are welcome to pop over for a listen when i get them back from Lockwood.

I am going to struggle to choose between them and these big B&O.

Where are you? I’d love to hear the full rangers.

  • There’s a good thread on PFM at the moment, where a guy has built new cabs for some 12”HPD.

  • Looks like it’s blossomed into a real professional organisation, good work!

  • Clapton. You're also very welcome to have a listen, though I'd be a bit embarrassed putting them up against Tannoys.

Just read that PFM thread - thanks for the tip off. Ideally I'd find some in old cabinets all complete so I can have a listen and see how they get on with my room and taste in music.

  • Have a look on ebay. Nick at Lockwood has a pair of mismatched Cheviots. They went for about 750, but obviously didn’t sell, so they are back on. That is probably the cheapest way.

  • Think I was just looking at them!

  • Just picked up some Linn Kan mark IIs, don't suppose anyone has bi wired cables with banana plugs knocking about looking for about 5.5M and 1.5M. Otherwise I guess I can just go to richer sounds

  • looking for about 5.5M and 1.5M

    Statute or Nautical miles?

Joking aside, when I were a lad all the cool kids were recommending equal length speaker cables.

  • Ain’t nothin flat earth about the change in resistance and impedance of different lengths of cable.

  • Joking aside, when I were a lad all the cool kids were recommending equal length speaker cables.

When the signal velocity of an electron is getting close to the speed of light I don't think the 4 metre difference in cable length will make a difference...

  • Isn't bi-wiring just getting you to buy twice as much speaker cable? I'm no engineer, but it never made sense to me.

  • Hah! Come on, it’s not about latency.

The electrical characteristics of wire change with an increase in length. Different length cables have different resistance and inductance. Makes sense to keep length consistent if you want whatever coloration to be identical for L & R. That’s science bro.

I didn’t buy into the speaker cable changing sound until I tried two strands of cat5 instead of thicker multi-strand cable a couple of weeks ago. Sounded completely different (shit). Don’t really get how some full range speaker guys swear by it.

  • I think I saw an explanation that put this into perspective by saying that yes of course the electrical properties of different length wires were different, but the variation in spec of all the resistors, capacitors, indicators etc in the rest of the system was several orders of magnitude greater.

So unless you are going to have a 1m cable and a 100m cable, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Probably. I imagine coiling the overly long cable to the speaker next to the amp has a much worse effect too.

  • Oh shit!
