• BBC News - Coronavirus: The fake health advice you should ignore
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-51735367

    @hugo7 see number 3:

    Professor Sally Bloomfield, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, says she does not believe you could make an effective product for sanitising hands at home - even vodka only contains 40% alcohol.

  • Why would you use Vodka? Just use isopropyl alcohol at 99% mixed down to around 70% with glycerin, aloe vera gel or just water in a pinch. Like it says in the sentence before your quote.

    How do people manage the hand washing on the tube, in the supermarket or generally out and
    about amongst people? I don't understand the arguments soap vs. sanitizer. You are not going to use the sanitizer instead of hand washing at home are you? It should be in addition
    to hand washing in situations where there is no soap and water available.

  • I wouldn't use anything, if the BBC is reporting that making your own sanitiser is a waste of time then that's good enough for me. I think the point the expert is making is that stuff you have lying around at home won't work.

    I very much agree with you on this

    It should be in addition
    to hand washing in situations where there is no soap and water available.

    But I think there's concern that some people think sanitiser is an alternative to hand washing. Which I can well believe, unfortunately.
