  • So there is a 'panic' at a loughton school as two teaching staff, who went on a half term ski trip to Italy have self isolated themselves for two paid weeks leave and a pupil is claiming to have been taken to Manchester to be quarantined.

Note that the trip wasn't near the contagion area, and that if you are claiming to be self isolating make sure you don't photograph yourself out and about and post it on social media. But some staff members of the school are in full on panic mode. There has been no official confirmation of a pupil, just other pupils mentioning it on snapchat/whatsapp groups and asking if it is true.

  • Well no... World War Z is an action film about zombies. That is all.

Not to call you out on it but you're digging to deep into the properganda. Don't over analyse it.

It's a shitty film unlike the less shitty book. About zombies. Which now I have an urge to watch.

Now lets not name call or anything. Either of you. Please.

  • CSB I have some old film footage, cine type film from Rolls Royce, of the nacelle and engine tests. Rolls Royce were disposing of them and I thought people would be interested in watching them as I was. I was wrong. CSB

  • Jesus...

    Engine talk... This is tedious.

Your all a bunch of nacelles

  • Zombie fucking COVID19 strains! That's where its at!

    @t_v tell them!

  • Three more patients in England have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of UK cases to 23.

That the latest? Am I late to the party?

  • This page: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public is updated at least once a day with the UK's stats.

    "
As of 29 February at 9am, a total of 10,483 people have been tested in the UK, of which 10,460 were confirmed negative and 23 positive.

The Department of Health and Social Care will be publishing updated data on this page every day at 2pm until further notice. This data is accurate as of 9am to ensure accurate data is published in a timely manner.

  • Are we panic buying tinned soup yet?

  • My understanding is that it is the same as the Hubei virus, but the virus has evolved while it has been circulating in Italy suggesting it has been there for some time. Is that right?

To Fox's point, I would assume a necessary part of a containment strategy is identifying cases in the first place. Neil Ferguson has estimated that probably only 1 in 4 cases outside China are being identified. However, the length of time it appears to have been circulating below the radar in Italy suggests there were not great screening measures in place.

  • Ocado are out of UHT milk

  • Aldi are out of hand sanitiser

  • Everyone is out of hand sanitiser

  • Much lower than I expected!

  • Anyone else read the Private eye medicine balls column:

With MD: "Despite the media angst, no one in the UK has yet died from 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). In the two SARS coronavirus outbreaks between 2002 and 2004, the UK media also went into full throttle ‘killer virus’ mode, yet only four people in the UK were infected and none died. Globally, far more people died falling down the stairs than from SARS, yet this hazard rarely gets the press it deserves…”

    From the website-https://www.private-eye.co.uk/issue-1515/columnists

  • Got the last two hand sanitiser's in aldi yesterday, felt like a massive win to end the week

  • can (aldi) vodka be used as a hand sanitiser?

  • Need 60% ABV, so no.

  • A valid question was raised on a Radio 4 programme this morning but I'm not sure it was answered as I couldn't listen to the end. There are now 23 confirmed UK cases and rising but is that right. How many of these 23 have recovered or are they all still close to or at death's door?

  • I've got a bottle of Everclear 95%. I think that kills everything.

  • While trying to find the full private eye column I found this:
    https://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/coronavirus-and-your-eyes/

So is protective eyewear is needed, or just co incidence?

  • Yes there are 23 confirmed cases as above link.
Not many seem to get to deaths door, although presumably a higher percentage will be in early testing...?

  • The John Hopkins GIS data has 9 recovered in the UK and no deaths, but I don't know what their source data is.

  • My point is, if you don't know what you're looking for how do you stop it/people who may be a bit poorly but you dont know why, and you don't know what you're stopping, how do you stop sick/sick looking people/asymptomatic people traveling?

  • I mean. There's non engineers taking about planes, why not have some non public health types talking public health?

  • Is there a forum recommended mask that is still available to buy?

My partner and I have flights booked to Osaka, Japan with a stopover in Seoul (not leaving the airport) at the start of April. Plan was to cycle tour and camp for most of the three week trip. We are going to see how the situation develops over the next month but thought it would be sensible to have masks at the ready.
