As it turned out, the mrs had mistakenly thought that item money was on hold....it wasn't, PayPal had syphoned those funds from her balance in preparation for refunding the person to whom she sent the wrong item - obviously under the circumstances it seems fair but I'm not sure I like them clearing a payment, then taking money from your balance to change that status to on-hold. Anyway, all is well - cheers
Is it an echeque payment, or whatever they're called? I've had a couple come through like this - I've always waited till they've cleared before sending and luckily haven't had a buyer be stroppy about it (it's an issue on their end, so quite right too).
