That's very kind of you but I think it'd make whatever we end up getting seem too disappointing in comparison.
A V70 still makes most sense really based on boot size and comfort, it's just the ULEZ thing really limits the choice. Plus buying such a high emissions car seems a bad thing. I don't know, really torn on whether to go for something more expensive or just try and get something for around 5k which doesn't require borrowing more money. -

That shape c or e class with 2.0 or super charged 1.8 i think you get in some of them are pretty relative, very much not fast, not great on fuel but not much goes wrong with them other than squeaky bushs, battery drain and charging issues. The face lift ones dont rust unless accident damaged, drive good and have aged well internally (no daft touch screens that stop working), not big though, a golf estate is larger in the boot

How about one of the Skoda Superb 3.6 V6 estates?
Closer than £5K, ulez compliant and bigNo idea on how they drive or on reliability

My Google-fu is failing me, so I thought someone here might have looked for the same question and found the answer:
Does my 2012 Golf 1.4 TSI have the DQ200 7 Speed Dry clutch?
(Still battling the big service with Mrs H who thinks all serving is made up by manufacturers and it's not needed. The Indy I called advised DSG oil change at 40k (~it's current mileage). )

Probably overkill in terms of power for our purposes. Would be fun but I'd probably be more sensible going for a less fast Superb if we were going to. Which then seems a bit boring. Which is totally irrational. I suppose it's also that we had a skoda last and feel like something different.
Been reading up on E-classes and do sound fairly reliable. Can live without it being amazing on fuel as we don't do huge mileage aside from occasional scotland trip.
We had an old A class that kept going for ever despite me totally neglecting servicing+maintenance, so feel fairly positive about Mercedes in that respect. That's probably very irrational again. -

Getting there...
Didn’t beat the target of firing it up before my daughter came along, but it is a big milestone.

I’ve no idea about service schedules for that car but after reading about the dsg gearbox I’d be very careful to follow service recommendations.
Call an official vw garage and see what they say?

Yeah. Just one of those annoying things to ask... "hey, I don't want to use you to do my service but...".
The Indy is meant to be good for VW according to PH, and they advised doing it at 40k. But it adds another £150 onto the cost.
My understanding is that whether it needs any oil changes depends on whether it's a dry or wet clutch.

If I financed a silly car is there insurance available in case (for e.g.) there’s a financial crash and the car loses a load of value, leaving me in negative equity?
-
• #53318
Seems highly unlikely, unless someone is offering short positions on some kind of classic car index
-
• #53319
I wouldn’t worry about it, they get those kinda calls all the time. Tell them you’re comparing prices.

Anyone know how common BMW E28 tourings are in the UK? Been keeping an eye out on the usual places and don't think I've seen one for sale in the last 6 months.

Super rare anywhere, never officially made by BMW, just conversions / coachbuilt
The E class is a lot larger, hence the supercharger that they bolted onto the V8.
It also has a more vertical rear hatch, the slope on mine does limit what you can get in the back.
You're welcome to borrow my car for a couple of days to check the size etc.
