  • Our administrator just sent someone home who had come back from a trip to milan with flu symptoms- although she didn’t seem that sick.

  • Right wing twats on the internet holding North Korea and Hungary up as examples why open borders are a bad thing. I.e strict border control means no covid-19

I don't even know where to start

Seems it not the border but North Korea’s progressive view of health care that is responsible.

  • And a passenger from the Diamond Princess has become the first Brit to die.

Hope it was not that Tory chap who was all over the news.

  • Excellent. Let's call this season off and start again in August.

  • My prediction is there will be more total reported cases in Europe than China by the end of next month. I think there will be 100k plus.

  • You are loving this aren’t you? Full on hysteria mode engaged.

  • Not loving it at all. I'll admit that I am highly anxious about it.

I do think there is an issue around people assuming everything will be fine and failing to see past the status quo. A mature approach isn't to dismiss any discussion around how things could go in my opinion. People should be allowed to discuss without being labelled fear mongers.

  • Stop being a grumpy old man and let the person on the internet speculate without accusations of hysteria or taking enjoyment out of a global pandemic that is killing people.

  • Edited in retrospect

  • You'll get 8 Internet points.

  • Meh - I set up the thread to share and obtain information, which it has done. I also tried to make the front page a resource of balanced sources for me to refer back to.

  • Will that mean next season will all be about last season?

  • population and economic mobility of europe vs. population and economic mobility of china = unlikely.

  • Some Imperial MRC research suggested a doubling time of 6 days, which I think was borne out in early February in Wuhan until the control measures took effect. If you assume the number of cases in Italy is materially under reported and is somewhere nearer 2-3k, then you are on course to hit over 100k cases by end of March, unless control measures are similarly effective to those in Hubei.

I guess, the 6 day doubling time could be specific to the social and environmental conditions in China. I hope so.

  • I’ve had ‘regular’ flu once when I was 28 and it nearly killed me. I don’t fancy my chances if I get this one.

  • I may be going round in circles, but I do think it is important for ordinary people to think about how things may evolve, because groundswell of opionion ultimately puts pressure on government to act. I don't get the impression of government leadership on this issue, though no doubt there is significant contingency planning happening in the background.

What is the government strategy? Is it containment or is it accepting a widespread epidemic is inevitable? Will the Prime Minister start making frequent press conferences on planning?

  • Out of interest, what is it exactly that is making you so anxious?

  • What's the best stategy for the apocolypse? Order a shitload of Huel?

  • Don't give away my strategy

  • Huel black for the extra protein

  • Can you eat the dead, if the meat is properly cooked?

  • Think so - best to get in a few chutnies though.

  • 1). The health impact on family, friends and colleagues. One point of relief is that it appears to have mild or no impact on children, though I worry as my eldest son in particular frequently suffers from chest infections. I also worry in particular about my parents and parents-in-law, my sister and brother-in-law, as I fear they may be more at risk.
2). If draconian quarantine / containment measures are introduced in the UK at some stage, how my family will manage
3). The general impact on people worldwide who are suffering from this already, as well as those who will in future
4). The unknowns of the long term impact of the virus on health and how it may mutate
5). The economic and social impact of both quarantine / containment measures, and / or a worldwide pandemic
