• Good mail day(s). Nitto spacers to match the Sim Works stem and a 34t narrowwide chainring.

Today is my last day as part time, I’ve been four days a week since April 2017, so it seems fitting to finish this bike on that last day (of course my son has been at kindy for almost a month, so I’ve had Tuesdays to my self).

  • Well despite doing things for a few hours, I felt like I achieved nothing. Managed to put the spacers and chainring on. I cut the front brake housing too short and shortened the chain too much. 🙄 It’s an old chain so I’ll buy a new one on Thursday. The front brake has very little clearance so it’s very fiddly to adjust the v-brakes. I decided to keep the canti on the back because I have had issues with the threads in the rear canti posts in the past and didn’t want to go through that again.

  • I also painted the chainring black.

  • I also want to get some woven tape like this Serfas stuff. BTP sell something similar and their international postage cost is pretty reasonable.

EDIT: Top two are Serfas, bottom is BTP. I think they’re the same tape.

EDIT: They are, the photo has been flipped and cropped. You can tell by the finishing tape.

How do you deal with the different cable pull versus V-brakes when it comes to levers?

  • I think @cake has used this tape

  • Well the levers can pull both, they just feel slightly different.

  • Indeed I do. Like it a lot. Bought from the serfas UK site but they appear to have run out of that colour.

  • I ordered some from BTP yesterday. Haven’t received a shipping notification and actually have no idea where it’s coming from (maybe the US?), but keen to try it out.

Still need to buy a new chain / see if I have a salvageable one for now just to get this rolling. Not sure if the front v-brakes will work due to clearances (although I did have v-brakes on this frame originally with narrower rims), so I’ll get that sorted before I tape the bars.

I’m also thinking of skipping the front rack and basket and going down the path of a Hungry Big Lunch bar bag. This bike won’t be used for commuting so I don’t need to carry much on it. I can always steal the rack and basket from my Spacehorse if I really need to carry more.

  • I am literally looking for any excuse to own a Hungry haha. So good.
Lol PS this is alibi the new forums and beers don't mix

  • Awesome. I met Harry from Hungry years ago through an Australian fixed gear forum. We’ve met up a few times over the years and him and his friend Marcel left their van at my house while they rode the Mawson Trail last year. Nice dude. I hope he does well with his bags. I’ve been using his Wald basket bag for over a year it it still looks new.

EDIT: Lol. So it’s just two FOA’ers talking on LFGSS.

  • hehe RIP aussie scene.

  • Finally got the front v-brake working, but I really don’t like the look (they sit awkwardly wide) or feel of it compared to the canti’s I was running, so I’m going to reinstall them and save the v-brakes for another build that will no doubt come up.

I also found another chain that was a touch longer so it’s rideable now.

  • Much better. And I might as well use the drilled stem for it’s intended purpose.

  • Done for now. I just need the bar tape to arrive and some cotton tape to wrap the chainstay. Chain is probably a touch short as well.

Please excuse the dead grass and overgrown garden, we’re knocking down and rebuilding soon, so it’s kind of hard to have motivation to have a nice yard.

  • Let’s hope this photo is the right way up.

  • Well the levers can pull both, they just feel slightly different.

Can they? I mean practically, I guess they can. But V-brakes and cantis have different cable pull, right? And therefore you need the right levers. That's what I thought anyway.

  • There might be a H/L "switch" in the levers so it pulls with a different ratio, like with mid-late 90s MTB levers. Not sure though. If I'm correct V levers pull more cable but are weaker, while cantis pull less but stronger. I tried a few V lever and canti brake setups before and it's as lethal as it gets, it won't stop you for crap. The opposite on the other hand can be viable I guess, but it's a pita to setup the clearance correctly.

Btw super nice bike, I love every bit of it, very inspirational! This is something I'd like to build in the future.

  • From my research, the TRP levers and mini v’s should play nice together. If I had wider fork spacing, they probably would’ve stayed on, but because the frame is old, I’ll be sticking with canti brakes. If it was my Space Horse with drop bars and those brakes it would be a different story.

I should clarify, these were mini v-brakes, not normal ones with longer arms.

  • So I found this bag I bought years ago to use as a basket bag. I never because it was a touch too small for a Wald basket. Might try and run it as a bar bag using some Voile straps. I just need to weight it down and see how it goes with old toe straps first.

  • Double.

  • And the photo.

I just need to cut the handle straps off, if I do go ahead with using it.

  • Played around with this some more. If I can cut the straps and sew some Velcro to them, I can use them to attach it to the bar. This way the straps are closer to the stem and the bag sits up higher and has less ability to move. Hmmm... I do have stick on Velcro, I wonder if it can be stitched on as well. The other option is some buckles than can be cinched / tightened using something like this:
