It’s because GSP isn’t available in their country? If so they should have had some kind of ‘shipping costs calculated at auction end’ or something?
-
• #1728
Would be very willing to do this but I assume the eBay team who deal with these things can and will read the messages between us that say it was delivered right? Having used eBay for almost 20 years now and this being my first cunt seller I do count myself lucky that I don't know how likely I am to be caught out!
-
• #1729
What was the seller’s feedback rating?
-
• #1730
It's good: 171 at 100% positive member for 5 years.

Nerging might get their attention

From reading about other people acting as sellers complaining about this from the other side where they've sold something as collection only and had a courier collecting it then receive a not received, nope-ebay don't check messages and don't give a shit...
-
• #1734
Thats what I assumed but Chile is on the list.
Perhaps I made a mistake but I'm almost certain that I opted into GSP for this item.
Never mind, all sorted now. Just annoying.

Ok so the guy I'm buying a frame off is bugging me via email asking for payment to his bank account instead of through ebay. I've asked politely for him to send me the total amount incl shipping via ebay instead but so far he seems unwilling. I'm not desperate for the item, thinking I'll wait until he agrees to settle through ebay as otherwise I'll be fucked if the frame doesn't show up, right?
-
• #1736
If the frame didn't turn up or you needed to dispute you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
Messaging outside the platform isn't good either. -
• #1737
Nah, fuck that. Stinks of you not getting what you pay for.
Don't reply to the emails, just message him through ebay, say ebay have told you not to pay outwith the system socan he cancel your sale. Even if he doesn'tcancel the sale eBay won't give you a non-payment mark if the seller is asking you to settle directly.

Finding a cheap frame is easy, getting money back from someone else's bank account is very difficult.

I’m guessing of the 39 watchers on my cargo bike, 38 were you lot. That’s almost as annoying as the potential buyer who asked for info on day one waiting til after auction end (without any bids) to ask if it’s still available.
100% chance of being fucked about with asking price now.
As for paying to a different paypal account, I bought something the other day and the seller thanked and confirmed they’ll send on Monday. By late afternoon it still said ‘pending’ on the payment, so after a few hours I checked with them. Seller seemed genuine, explains they recently changed email attached to their ebay/paypal. I did that over a decade ago and remember it caused some issues. I cancelled the payment to the ‘wrong’ email. Anyway, paid with goods and services option to their preferred email and they confirmed it within ebay message system with a screengrab. For £20 I’m doubtful of a con, even so I still have the paypal protection if not as described.
Tldr - stop watching my cargo bike on ebay, you’re just getting my hopes up.

Don't reply to the emails, just message him through ebay,
Doing this now and copying in his emails in my ebay replies, so far no response. He's also bumped the shipping cost up by £10, claiming he'd misread the courier's dimension limits. Why do people behave like this over a few pounds, seems like a lot of effort for not much gain?
Edit: seems the guy is (hopefully) just an inexperienced seller. I've now had to send him links to ebay FAQ on how to invoice me etc
-
• #1741
Yup, guy was just a bit thick. In the end I booked the courier myself but refused payment outside ebay which finally made him send me an invoice. Fingers crossed the bloody thing turns up now.

• #1742
Is anyone else getting problems with buyers who are basically bots or trolls? Sold a Brompton and got undeliverable to my invoice and follow-up. Found out who the guy was thanks to an unusual name and work address as the shipping address - spoke to him on the phone and he genuinely knew nothing about it. So someone has hacked his Ebay and is winning auctions on stuff to deliver to his work?!?!?

Then had the same thing happen this evening. Winning bidder on a Rapha neck warmer (at full RRP!) has a string of non-payments and is uncontactable. Ebay says he's a US bidder but default ship address is in England?
What's the scam here?

• #1744
This is the Rapha item https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114120053708 I don't get it!

Mrs has sold something on eBay and the funds are 'on hold' in her PayPal account. She's sold a few bits regularly though one is currently being returned (no argument, she mistakenly sent a wrong item so will refund as soon as received) so this is the only reason I can see why it would be. Is she safe to send the item for which the funds are on hold?
Cheers

• #1746
Is it an echeque payment, or whatever they're called? I've had a couple come through like this - I've always waited till they've cleared before sending and luckily haven't had a buyer be stroppy about it (it's an issue on their end, so quite right too).
-
• #1747
As it turned out, the mrs had mistakenly thought that item money was on hold....it wasn't, PayPal had syphoned those funds from her balance in preparation for refunding the person to whom she sent the wrong item - obviously under the circumstances it seems fair but I'm not sure I like them clearing a payment, then taking money from your balance to change that status to on-hold. Anyway, all is well - cheers

fuckity. why do people tape fork steerers to top tubes?
Frame has turned up with a nice steerer shaped dent in it, totally avoidable if the fork was just taped to the box... the irony being the seller had really put loads of effort into wrapping it otherwise.
gutted.

Won a thing on eBay. The seller is obviously new to this and had no idea what they're doing, they had the item listed twice with the second version finishing on Sunday. The listing I won was badly written, hence the deal I think I've got.
I'm concerned that the second listing will run it's course and someone will win with a higher bid than mine. The seller then ignores my win and sells the item to the second auction winner. It's the kind of thing I'd want to go and inspect and collect in person before paying, though I would also still like to pay via PayPal when there just for the extra protection.
Should I just pay with PayPal now to "secure" the item without seeing it? Seems fairly low risk with eBay's money back guarantee, though leaves no room for any negation when I go to collect - not a dick move, they're 50 year old speakers so may well have issues not visible / audible on the eBay listing. It's a decent chunk of cash - £500. The seller hasn't responded to two messages, though I suspect that's because they're old and probably turn their wifi off at night rather than a scammer.

Even if you pay them they can ignore you.

If you were unsure of the condition then inspecting them before bidding or clarifying with the seller is usually the way this works. If you bid and win on incomplete information...well that's your bad, or a calculated gamble that's priced in. Sounds like it is.
Well the lesson for them then is not to bid on things in the UK from Chile.
