  • how do you guys attach your baskets to your front racks? just zip ties?

  • My bad. What I was trying to get at is if you were to build a rack without a specific bag in mind, would there be an optimal height at which to place to two horizontal supports on each side bearing in mind that some bags have a lower clip to stop them swinging.

  • that's my plan

  • Yeah,’lots of zip ties. Keep an eye on them though.

  • I've always used the bottom clip to hook over a leg of the rack rather that a horizontal bar. It's not something you can easily adjust once the bag is mounted, so an upwards facing clip like it the picture would be almost impossible to mount the bag on the rack.

  • Shameless plug for my friend Harry who makes Hungry bags in Sydney. I’ve been using his Wald basket for over a year with no issues. Will be purchasing a Big Lunch very soon.

  • does anyone have one of those planet x ostrich bags mounted to a front rack? how does it mount?

  • ah, thanks!

i suspected this setup would require a decaleur, damn.

  • Lots of KlickFix options for bar bags - Ortleib, and Carradice do options if you can't do a decaleur. Takes up a fair amount of bar real estate though.

  • yeah - I already run quite narrow bars so that's not an option

basically I want a front rack and bag for my triban rc520 (has mid-fork eyelets rated for a 9kg load), mainly for commuting, but also sometimes longer rides. sick of backpack life, and i have a recurring coccyx and back injury which is making it uncomfortable if I pop to pick up some milk on the way home.

i am thinking spesh pizza rack + restrap small rando bag, or the velo orange transporteur bag, but that solution is spendy.

  • I have an ILE portuer bag that I have run with a Pizza Rack and a Surly 24 pack rack. I've also had lower back surgery so I can endorse this approach.

Nitto do small racks with decaleurs built in but that's not necessarily any less spendy. The Pizza Racks are heavier than you think though. Happy to share my set up if you want a closer look. I also have a KlickFix bag set up I can show you too if you want to compare.

  • ahh, cheers. the pizza rack seems to be reasonably priced (ish), and i'm not too fussed about weight. unless it's really heavy? hmm.

  • Pizza rack isn't massively heavy but if it's just for one bag it seems a bit much.

How about something like this? https://www.bikester.co.uk/rfr-rack-bike-rack-front-black-472179.html

  • Nah. Not really heavy. I got mine from Rutland Cycling IIRC - it was quick and they had the best price.

Check the width of the rando bag and make sure that the bag is narrower than your drops and with enough space for your hands on the hoods.

  • looks perfect apart from the canti bosses

reckon i could make it work for this?

  • ^^ that is also a really good option.

EDIT - oops forgot about the mid fork requirement

  • I have seen something somewhere, but everything I find is just massively expensive for what it is..

Nitto M18, Surly 8 Pack Rack, Velo Orange Porteur

Cheapest that looks like it would fit is the BLB one - https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-racks/blb-front-rack-chrome/

  • I would go for the pizza rack just because of allround versatility.. Good for rack packs but also for everyday stuff like picking up packets, grocerys etc.

  • After trying all possible options for commuting I’ve settled on a carradice super c saddle bag and bagman qr. light, sturdy, pretty expandable/adaptable when you need it/easy to fit and remove and can be carried like a normal bag with a shoulder strap. Front racks are au fait but unless you need the flexibility of strapping stuff to a rack, I don’t think you can beat a super c. Photo below, they’re massive, like 24L max I think? I ran various front rack setups for the last 6 years but decided for commuting I prefer the little bit of weight at the back, without the heft and wind block on the front.

  • Wish I had enough clearance for even a smaller Carradice and Bagman (I don't. I ride tiny frames.)

I actually have a Carradice alternative, a Bridge Street saddlebag. 7 litres is okay for about 70% of the days I commute, but I'd like to be able to carry a bigger load occasionally.

  • I'm late to this convo but thought I'd chip in anyway.

I have an Ostrich bag on a Rawland Raidoverks rando rack. The Ostrich bag is held on by a VO decaleur. I love the set up and not had any problems. I have 40cm flared bars btw so no hand rubbing.

Without a decaleur I think that the restrap magetic thingy seems like your best option (I haven't tried one though) or strapping a basket to a rack with cable ties.

Ostrich do bags that have loops that strap to the handlebar but this looks like a bit of a faff to take on and off.

  • all this depends HIGHLY upon frame angles up front, stem length and HT height

but when it works, its magic

  • was hoping you'd chip in! thanks.
