  • Which is, from my perspective at least, good news.

I do find the evidence that people have caught it, been cured and then caught it again, worrisome. I wonder whether the second time is milder or whether one's weakened state makes death a more likely consequence.

We are taking every conceivable precaution as my demented 84 year old father in law is in considerable jeopardy. Also, if my wife gets ill, I am not sure who will look after him.

  • I'm not afraid of the virus. Have no health problems, my blood pressure is perfect, don't have diabetes, asthma, or any other chronic diseases. Haven't had a flu or even a cold lately, my immune system is rather strong, and my personal hygiene leaves nothing to be desired.

I'm however very much afraid of getting hospitalized here in Hungary, where hundreds - if not thousands - of people die annually due to infections caused by extremely poor facility hygiene and bed bugs. Where most hospitals are severely understaffed, as most of our doctors and nurses have moved countries years ago due to the ridiculously shit working conditions and even more ridiculous wages. So I'm genuinely fucking afraid of having to lie in a hospital bed here, even for a second.

  • This fella doesn't seem too worried about it...

Paul Hunter, professor in medicine, at the University of East Anglia cautions against reading too much into the case of a Japanese woman who has tested positive for coronavirus for a second time.

In remarks distributed by the Science Media Centre he said:

“So there are a two possibilities

“1. This is indeed a relapse of the illness – This was seen is SARS but in someone who was being treated with steroids. It is possible that the illness could be biphasic as suggested by Dr Tierno though this is unlikely to be common based on current information.

“2. She has a prolonged excretion of virus from her initial infection and tests were either not done or were not done sufficiently well or enough to confirm clearance. It does appear that swabs for the virus are not 100% reliable. In this case it is even possible that the recent sore throat maybe unrelated. COVID-19 tends to cause upper respiratory tract symptoms rather less frequently that did SARS.

“I would caution against reading too much into this report given the lack of information. However, the report reinforces the fact that we have to investigate all such findings really thoroughly and report such information if we are to make the best decisions based on sound scientific evidence. At this time I would council against changing management guidelines based on this case but we do need to always keep them under review.”

  • By 2pm someone had stolen it and put in on ebay for an order of magnitude more than RRP.

  • What Ru said.

  • Something will get us all in the end.. don't fret too much - it may never happen.

There are limitless ways in which we will pop our clogs - coronavirus is unlikely to be one of them :)

  • You say that but apparently if the case mortality rate of 1 to 2% is roughly accurate and this virus becomes endemic, it's possible that it would overtake cancer and heart disease as global leading cause of death.

  • Maybe, but catastrophizing / worrying about it about it isn't going to do any good ..
Plenty of other things to worry about

    Drive carefully out there

    This bit worries me.

  • As long as it is the immuno compromised, is there an issue? It is not like the spanish flu that killed healthy people by over stimulating the immune response.

  • It's a bit of an issue if you are one of the immuno compromised (or are married to one), tbh!

  • Worded that very badly, sorry. Looking at some reports from Italy stating the deaths were people that were already ill and one of the patients that died was having chemotherapy. What I am trying to say badly is that it is not as deadly as the spanish flu was as it is not killing 'healthy' people. People are recovering.

Am also one of the immuno compromised as a diabetic, high blood pressure and many other first world maladies. At the mo am more concerned about medication shortages than this.

  • given how many manky cunts there are in my office who hack and cough over our lovely hotdesks, how shite the ventilation is, and the fact it's right next to major transport hub and everyone goes to neighbouring shops/cafes for lunch etc, I'd say I'm fucked as soon as it gets out.

Given UK temperament for not heeding any kind of expert advice, or limiting individual activities in favour of benefiting wider society, that will be any fucking day now.

Underlying health condition just the cherry on top of the plague cake. It's at this point I regret having been so dishonest about how much my bikes cost me... ah well. never even got to taste pangolin either...

  • dishonest about how much my bikes cost me

That secret goes to the grave with me

I'm not so sure - any chance for 2 weeks of netflix on the sofa and we'll be all over it.

But at least we still have free healthcare and can (mostly) afford to take a day off. In the US it's something like $1400 to be tested + no sick pay. Won't take much for it to go mental there.

  • A blessing in disguise was the lack of queue at Heathrow immigration this morning, literally got done in 2 mins.

  • Absolutely crazy.

The Mrs parents said people are stock piling already.

  • never even got to taste pangolin either...

Do they now have immunity? They may supersede us? Along with AI. AI and Pangolin master race incoming. This is probably already trending on Weibo.

  • dishonest about how much my bikes cost me

"My worry is that when I die my wife will sell my bikes for what I told her they cost."

  • I want a pangolin gilted(guilded) scale set of armour.

If you nip to the Horniman Museum they have a few stuffed pangolins.

  • Someone got sent hime from my office today because their flatmate has been to Italy. Another was asked not to go to the opera for her 40th birthday last night as the friend she was going with had her brother from Japan come and visit last week.

We've had loads of clients cancel meetings and not turn up to our events because they've been instructed to avoid face to face meetings.

  • Hmm... Dunno. Take that school trip to Italy-you reckon parents/grandparents etc of the kids have bothered to self-isolate? Most folk will cock their snoot at it in favour of pub/football/cinema/shopping/eating out because more fun than Netflix, even if they told their work they can't come in I recon...
