Cycle Surgery, formerly Beta Bikes and before that Freewheel, was at the top end of West End Lane, by Fortune Green. Whiskers was in Willesden Lane, on the other side of the Kilburn High Road. It's not that far but I would not say it was 'just round the corner'.

The newly opened Decathlon store in Beckton is closing in March 23rd 2020. A majority of the bikes, parts, and accessories are being relocated to other branches for stock, the lower half of the store stock is being reduced up to 40%.

Decent independent bike shops are like gold dust. To be a bike mechanic in London with a big name retailer you either need to live with your parents or have a cheap co-habitation setup to survive on £17k or so. Or get a job as a university technician and start on £31k with good pension and 2 hours of breaks per day.
