What back up utility are people using?
Just got time machine working, and it’s doing its thing, but I’m not sure it’s the best for me.
Any recommended replacements/alternatives?

Carbon Copy Cloner. Two bootable backups, one kept offsite, rotated each week. That’s as well as Time Machine.

I was thinking of using superduper, and having a bootable backup alongside the time machine back up.
Then turning one of my old hdd's into a bootable backup, which sits somewhere gathering dust.
Then probably buy another external to back up all the media/music/big files (4tb maybe)
